Part I:
The Power of Touch)

The Five Senses × Five Elements × Aromatherapy
The Five Senses help us perceive the world through smell, touch, hearing, sight, and taste.
Like any skill, our senses can be trained to improve awareness and sensitivity.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Five Elements theory explains how the five major organs work together in balance and harmony to maintain physical and emotional well-being:
Metal – Lungs, nose, skin | Water – Kidneys, ears, bones | Wood – Liver, eyes, nails
Fire – Heart, tongue, face | Earth – Spleen, mouth, muscles
Note: We begin with the five “Zang” because when the “Zang” function well, the corresponding Six “Fu” body systems and functions are more likely to remain healthy and balanced.
The Five Elements maintain harmony through the cycles of Nourishment (Sheng) and Restraint (Ke).
These cycles help regulate organ functions and support physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
For example:
• Metal nourishes Water – Healthy lungs support healthy kidney function.
• Metal restrains Wood - an imbalance in lung function may affect liver function.
Note: We begin with the sense of smell (nose) and the Metal element (lungs, nose, skin). The sense of touch (The Power of Touch) will be explored the next part.
The Five Senses receive information from the environment continuously. They cannot be avoided or fully defended against; we can only receive and respond to them. Unless we consciously reduce sensitivity or, due to pathological conditions, a sense becomes impaired or non-functional.
For example, in a confined space such as an elevator, when an unpleasant smell is suddenly encountered, the sense of smell (nose) is strongly stimulated. This may lead to an emotional response such as irritation or anger. According to the Five Elements theory, this emotional shift may influence Liver function (Wood element), as Metal restrains Wood.
Note: In the next part, we will explore how emotions triggered by sensory stimulation affect the balance and function of the Five Elements.
If your sense of smell is highly sensitive, aromatherapy may help balance emotions and support the normal functioning of the body’s organ systems.
People with a highly sensitive sense of smell may sometimes assume they are allergic to essential oils, when in fact they are reacting to synthetic fragrances, which the body may not tolerate. This can lead to strong nasal discomfort or even itchy eyes. In many cases, it simply means your sense of smell is correctly identifying what is not natural.
If your sense of smell is less sensitive, aromatherapy may help gently stimulate and train the olfactory system, while supporting lung energy (Qi) to help promote the circulation of Qi throughout the body’s organ systems.
The most efficient and effective application of aromatherapy is through the olfactory system (nose) and the skin (touch), where essential oils can be absorbed and interact with the body.
Aromatherapy is especially beneficial for emotional regulation and can serve as supportive care in the management of chronic conditions.
Aromatherapy is the systematic use of plant essential oils to promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Aromatherapy is recognised as a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).
By understanding the Five Senses, the Five Elements, and Aromatherapy, you can embark on a journey of self-awareness, discovery, healing, and growth. Perhaps this may become one of the best things that happens to you in 2026.
