2025 was an incredibly challenging year for our Head Coach Sumiko.
In May, she was involved in a serious accident when she was hit by a drunk driver during a morning training ride. She suffered a fractured spine and a torn rotator cuff in her left shoulder, which sidelined her for several months. A shoulder surgery in June 25 set her back drastically.
Just as she was working her way back, another setback came in November 25 when she was diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer.
What followed was a difficult journey โ she underwent a mastectomy and pushed herself through recovery with remarkable determination. In fact, just 7 days after her surgery, she was already back on her bike.
Her resilience, mental strength, and unwavering positive outlook have been nothing short of inspiring.
While she continues physiotherapy for her shoulder, Coach Sumiko has returned to racing with grit and determination.
In 2026, her comeback has been steady and impressive:
April:
โขย Metasprint Triathlon (Sprint) โ 5th place
โข Hydrox- Women's Team and Women's Double event- Debut attempt
โขย Tour de Brisbane Gran Fondo โ 5th place (qualified for the UCI World Championships in Niseko)
And just last week, she achieved an incredible milestone โ finishing as 1st Woman overall and 1st in her age group in the Long Distance Duathlon at the T100 event!
All this while, she kept her role as our Head Coach active and she never once shielded her responsibilities at work. She was even working at the hospital bed before both her surgeries!
Her spirit and positivity make her an exceptional role model for all our students!๐ช๐ช๐ชโค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
