We had the last event of the year on the 21st of February by celebrating Mardi Grass. It was a pleasant end to the semester as we cooked pancakes together, gathered with other members of the Yale-NUS community to chat and take a break from assignments.
The tradition of Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday in French) varies around the world. While the US throws a massive party, Eastern Europeans spend this time playing family games, dressing up in traditional fairytale costumes, and eating an insane amount of pancakes so marking the end of winter and the beginning of long-waited spring.
Thank you to the chapter members who helped with organising this enjoyable event as well as to those who came down to hang out with European Horizons at Yale-NUS!

Professor José Ignacio Torreblanca, Professor of Political Science at the National Distance Education University (UNED) in Spain and the Head of the Madrid Office of the European Council of Foreign Relations visited Yale-NUS last week. Prof. Torreblanca gave a lecture titled “Populism in Europe: Is Spain Different?”. He talked about how Spain differentiates itself from most of the other countries in Europe that experience the rise of right-wing populism. Spain, on the other hand, has witnessed left-wing and nationalist-separatist movements. As European Horizons at Yale-NUS chapter, we were very glad to attend this insightful and informative lecture and get the opportunity to talk to Prof. Torreblanca as well as introduce our organization’s efforts to him.

We had our first event of the second semester on the 23rd of January: Semester Abroad in Europe sharing session. Four students who had various experiences in four different countries talked about their semester abroad in Europe.
As European Horizons we organised this event to create a useful platform during the semester abroad application process. It allowed other students to ask their questions and learn about the specific opportunities each country offers. This way, we were able to form a sharing space where students can help each other.
We want to thank Eda Şemsioğlu, Zhong Xuan Khwa, Winnie Tan, and Raya Lyubenova for sharing their experiences in England, Denmark, France, and Italy respectively. Thank you for your interest in the event and stay tuned for more exciting ones throughout the semester!
