Chinese dance is rooted in classical dance traditions. Basic hand positions are essential for developing graceful body lines, breathing control, and expressive movement. The seven basic hand positions include Shun Feng Qi, Dan An Shou, Dan Shan Bang, Tan Zhang, Chong Zhang , Ti Jin, and Tuo Zhang, emphasizing “roundness, softness, grounding, and extension.”

Introduction to Basic Chinese Dance Hand Positions

1. Shun Feng Qi

One hand is raised above the side of the head while the other opens naturally, creating lines like a flag flowing in the wind. The movement should feel soft and extended, commonly used in classical dance poses.

2. Dan An Shou

One hand presses gently downward in front of the body while the other hand supports naturally. The movement should appear calm, soft, and rounded through the wrists.

3. Dan Shan Bang

One arm opens to the side at shoulder level, forming the “Shan Bang” position. The shoulders should stay relaxed with curved and flowing arm lines.

4. Tan Zhang

The palm opens naturally, facing upward or outward as if unfolding. It expresses lightness, softness, and elegance.

5. Chong Zhang

The palm pushes forward with a clean and strong movement. It is often used to express strength and emotion.

6. Ti Jin

One hand is gently lifted in front of the hip while the other is placed behind the body, creating a graceful and refined classical style. It is often combined with body movement and eye expression.

7. Tuo Zhang

The arm lifts upward with the palm facing up, creating a sense of extension and stage presence. Fingers should extend naturally while the shoulders and neck remain relaxed.
