2022 National Day Celebration
South View celebrated our nation’s National Day in school on the 8th of August. Our teachers shared with the students the significance of Singapore’s National Day and our students were in high spirits as they sang many National Day songs. Songs such as perennial favourite ‘Home’ that was released way back in 1998 and this year’s song ‘Stronger Together’ were sung with passion and gusto by the students. The students also partook in some exercise routines under ActiveSG that were choregraphed as part of this year’s celebration. The students were also encouraged to partake in many National Day activities that had been curated by this year’s National Day organising committee. Parent volunteer photographers also went around taking photographs of our students who were proudly decked in red t-shirts to show support for our National Day!

SVPS celebrated our annual Reading Fiesta this year with the theme of Many Stories, One Singapore. With more local authors and illustrators, more stories have been told with Singapore as the setting. From tales from the past, to mystery novels, we hope that Southviens will be inspired by local authors to continue reading and writing their own stories too!

Reading Fiesta was held for one week from 25 to 29 July 2022. The objectives of the fiesta are to instil the love of reading in Southviens and to unleash their creativity. A range of English and Mother Tongue related activities was planned for the pupils. SVPA also launched the start of their Storytelling sessions during the Lower primary recess.

Character Parade was held on 28 July (Thurs) and was the highlight of the week. Southviens came to school dressed as their favourite storybook characters from local stories, while some brought props made from recycled materials. Pupils had fun sharing about their characters and enjoyed themselves that day!

‘Carpe Diem’ means to seize the day. It is used to express the idea that we should enjoy life while we can. At South View, we have set aside time for the P5 and P6 students to 'carpe diem' or 'seize the day' as part of the school’s applied learning programme. We want to encourage them to grab the opportunity to take more ownership of their own learning and play a part in building a sustainable Singapore. This learner-centred experience aims to empower students to discover and pursue their interests in one of 8 themes on Sustainability such as the Art of Trash, Guardians of Gaia, RE: Making Sounds, Say NO to Food Waste and many more.

New to Carpe Diem this year is the motivation workshop and the learning journey/hands-on experience. Through these activities, we hope that students will develop greater resilience to go through challenges and be more self-directed in their learning and motivated to achieve their personal best.

2022 Virtual Exchange Experience
South View Primary School and Singapore International School - Hong Kong.
Our 5 Unity students had a chance to be involved in a Virtual Exchange Experience via
Zoom with Singapore International School - Hong Kong on 29 April 2022 and 20 May
2022.

The objectives of this programme are to create opportunities for Southviens to learn to
converse with their overseas peers and broaden their perspectives on current issue of
Managing Covid-19. Students participated in an online quiz that reflects their learning of
growth mindset and the school value, resilience.
This programme promotes mutual understanding and international friendship between
the students where they show their appreciation by writing and sharing poems on
friendship and care.

To create a fulfilling and memorable learning experience, a challenge was given to
students where they were asked to design a ‘thank you’ postcard. The best design was
chosen and students wrote a message for their new friends in Hong Kong.

Values in Action (VIA) – Food Donation Drive

Teachers and students spent time packing the donation items and doing their VIA reflections on last Thursday, 14 April 2022. A group of teachers, student leaders and parent volunteers came onboard to help with the packing of donation items. During FTGP lesson, students reflected on this learning experience and gained a better understanding of the purpose and impact of this hands-on activity. Students also learnt that no gift is too small, and every gift goes a long way.

Prior to this collection, Southviens were strongly encouraged to plan and save their pocket money to purchase donation items for needy families assisted by Yong En Care Centre.
Through this VIA activity, the school aims to nurture socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community. The school would like to thank all parents, students and parent volunteers for their contributions and support.

South View Primary School held an in-school P5 Cohort Camp on 24 and 25 March this year. Focusing on the theme "GRIT", the camp provided opportunities for Southviens to be reflective learners with resilience and self-confidence. They learnt cooperative skills which encourage them to express their thoughts and actions responsibly. There were also activities for students to exercise problem-solving skills and think flexibly in group settings.

Through these authentic learning opportunities, Southviens also deepened their understanding of Executive Functioning Skills to learn and manage daily life.

To celebrate our Primary 1 students’ first milestone in primary school, the school organised the P1 Character Day on Friday, 25 March 2022
The P1 Character Day aims to equip students with social emotional competencies and useful life skills that they can apply in their daily lives. These activities help to inculcate values of care, responsibility and promote parent-child bonding through hands on and SLS activities. There was an opportunity for them to apply the skills and techniques learnt through the Aesthetics Enrichment Programme by performing a class dance. Last but not least, the P1 students also learnt good cyber netiquette to help them to communicate responsibly online.
The school believes that it is important to establish a strong partnership with the parents to provide a holistic education for our P1 students. We hope parents can continue to get their children to practise and reinforce these life skills, values and cyber netiquette at home.

Virtual Pongal Competitions by W2 Cluster schools
Pongal is a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai, which is considered an auspicious month. As such, our pupils took part in the Pongal competitions and showcased their talents. Although it was a virtual competition, the effort and interest shown by the pupils were remarkable.

Teachers and pupils gathered in school on Monday, 31 January 2022, to celebrate Chinese New Year. Some of the pupils came to school on that day dressed in ethnic Chinese clothes to add to the festive mood. Other than the e-Concert, the teachers and pupils spent time packing the fortune bags as well as designing the greeting cards which were delivered to the beneficiaries on the same day. While most of the pupils were in the classrooms with their teachers, there were also some pupils who were busy packing the mandarin oranges for their peers and sorting the fortune bags to be delivered to the beneficiaries.

Time was set aside for all our students to transit back to normal school routines during our Welcome Back To School Week. The WBTS week aims to transit the pupils back to school life and provide opportunity for students to build new relationships with new friends and teachers.

During the 5-day programme, our P2-P6 pupils started the WBTS week with HBL on the first day of WBTS week (4th Jan), while our young P1 students came to school.

All pupils were back in school on Day 2. Teachers and students were engaged in different activities, such as ICT Familiarisation, exploring the heritage spaces and the different learning spaces, etc. These activities allowed our pupils and teachers to build student-student and teacher-student relationship.

At the end of the five days, students would have transited well with school rigour and they are expected to follow class expectations, and strive to achieve their personal goals set during the WBTS week.

The theme for this year’s Annual Prize Giving Day (APGD) is ‘A Rainbow of Possibilities’. The last 2 years had been a very challenging one and the theme for this year APGD aims to cement the concept of perseverance and the ability to seize the opportunities that are presented within the challenges itself. In parallel, the school strives to provide enriching and valuable experiences and learning opportunities for all our students through the different programmes and initiatives throughout the year. We want to also encourage students to stay upbeat despite the challenges, and to seize every opportunity that arises from it. We strongly believe that there is a rainbow of possibilities with hard work and resilience. We congratulate all our students for the continuous effort to grow and achieve one’s personal best. We would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to our SV parents for their unwavering support and close partnership in the holistic development of our Southviens.
