Strength, Courage, Humility. The Russian Martial Art in Singapore. WHAT IS SYSTEMA?

The Russian martial art, Systema, is a free-form approach to self-defence and health that is both practical and highly effective. A principal based martial art, Systema is a complete method of training that develops in its practitioners a calm state of mind, unfettered movement and a strong spirit. Unique in its approach to combatives, Systema breaks away from the conventional memorization of tech

Our 3rd seminar in our «YOU ARE (NOT) WEAK» mastery series: Transformation of Pain

So far we have looked at the fundamentals and body work of Systema as well as ground fighting and situation awareness in our seminars with システマアカデミー Systema Academy Martin Wheeler and システマ東京 北川貴英 Systema Tokyo

This upcoming seminar we will be looking into an aspect of Systema that deals both with the combative side as well as the health aspect - pain management.

Many martial arts discuss technical aspects and strategies in combat, but many techniques depend on assuming the person can actually function at the executive level of training. Grit, determination and raw brute force might work - but is there another way?

Nicely, this topic lends itself to the health aspect of Systema as well. Chronic pain or injury leads us to be unable to use our bodies in the “normal way” we wish we always have. In this seminar we will explore how psyche, recovery and relaxation can help you to find the “other way” of doing martial arts and approaching health.

For this seminar we will be having both David Mundi from H2H Tactics and Lau Wen Hsin share their perspectives on pain management and how we can learn to transform these into meaningful signals for our training and lives. Dave has had an extensive background in training combatives and fi****ms and professionally trains people in violent situations such as bodyguards and bouncers.

A little bit of a discourse on the sensitivity of striking. When people do stuff, they share about themselves. If we learn to feel it, we can understand a lot about them even in very short moments - like a strike.

May Month-end Workshop

The theme of the workshop was short work - mainly about understanding how it differs from our other methodology of soft work which focuses on sensitivity and movement continuity. Short work focuses on consequences and the need to affect the chain of attack as soon as it presents - not earlier and not later. Both soft and short work are needed as they present different aspects of Systema and without one or the other it starts to be imbalanced.

Systema is a Russian Martial Art that eschews techniques and instead focuses on universal principles. As a result, the training takes a freer form and students study survival in a broad variety of situations instead of responding to fixed attacks. Training in Systema takes a very personalized approach surfacing individual strengths and weaknesses. This is why the old name for Systema in Russian is “Poznai Sebia”, or “know thyself” - it is an art to help us understand who we really are.

In this class we study the concept of “meeting” our attackers before the contact. This gives us the right body preparation for the attack without which every punch becomes a surprise to the nervous system and overwhelms it.
