Singapore’s national conservatory, situated within the National University of Singapore
Shaping the future of music education
Inspirational life-affirming music-making is at the heart of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore. Centred in one of the world’s most dynamic countries, the Conservatory is uniquely placed to offer a distinct and powerful contemporary Asian voice. Founded in 2003, YST quickly established a reputation as Asia’s most exciting international conservatory by b
ringing together a world-class faculty and facility to develop excellence in instrumental performance and composition. Building on this strong foundation, the Conservatory has evolved over the past decade to become one of the world’s most distinctive music schools, diversifying its offerings and continually seeking to connect authentically with its surrounding community. Specialisations added subsequently include Voice, Audio Arts & Sciences, Conducting, Music & Society and Music, Collaboration & Production. Alongside students from Singapore, the Conservatory community is internationally diverse, with representation from over 20 countries and five continents. Keenly focused on nurturing identity as a driver for excellence, YST’s Bachelor of Music programme offers full financial support for all its undergraduate students, enabled by major gifts from the Yong Loo Lin Trust. The Conservatory’s continuum of offerings further includes a Master of Music degree, NUS-facing Second Majors, Minor and modules, Continuing Education & Training courses for adult learners, and a Young Artist programme. We host a vibrant performance calendar with around 200 concerts annually, featuring students and faculty alongside international artists and ensembles. Our community engagement and professional integration programme has extensive local, regional and global reach. Students are supported to find their own artistic pathways through exchanges, festivals, competitions and projects. More broadly, our international networks and partnerships further enhance the educational experience and ensure our continued evolution. Originally designated the Singapore Conservatory of Music, the Conservatory was officially renamed the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at its opening in 2003, in recognition of a S$25 million gift by the Yong Loo Lin Trust to honour the late Yong Siew Toh, who found her greatest joy teaching piano and helping others to appreciate the world through music. The Trust subsequently made another generous contribution of S$25 million in 2008, endowing YST Conservatory with a total gift of S$50 million, which was matched by funding from the Ministry of Education. The gift from Yong Loo Lin Trust, further enhanced with contribution from corporate sponsors, enables the new Conservatory to offer full scholarships to a critical mass of talent.

We’re excited to announce the launch of the YST Young Orchestra Academy (YOA), a new programme developed in collaboration with the Singapore Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
YOA is a new orchestral training platform designed to nurture young musicians through structured ensemble learning, collaborative music-making and orchestral performance experiences.
Through YOA, string, wind, brass and percussion students come together to progress from foundational ensemble skills to more advanced orchestral training within a conservatory-inspired environment—participating in weekly musicianship classes, sectional coaching, full orchestra rehearsals and concert performances.
More than just playing in an orchestra, YOA is about growing as musicians—learning to listen deeply, work together, and develop confidence and artistry along the way.
Only students aged 13-21 residing in Singapore may apply. Younger students with exceptional readiness may be considered.
