IB Learner Profile-03: Reflective: Growing Through Thoughtful Self-awareness

In the previous two posts, we explored the concept and educational foundations of Reflective within the IB Learner Profile.
At a deeper level, this attribute extends beyond classroom learning and influences how students navigate an ever-changing world. Within the International Baccalaureate framework, learners are expected to continuously evaluate themselves, refine their approaches, and grow through experience.
For example, when students encounter academic challenges, collaborative situations, or important life decisions, being Reflective does not mean rigidly holding onto existing ideas. Instead, it involves carefully examining experiences and judgments in order to gain deeper understanding and improve future actions.
Through this process, students develop stronger self-awareness and maturity. They learn to recognize both their strengths and limitations, accept imperfection as part of growth, and continuously refine their thinking and behavior through reflection.
Being Reflective, therefore, is not only a learning habit, but also a critical lifelong competency. It enables students to remain thoughtful in times of change and continue growing through experience.

Exploring Self-Expression Through Art, Connecting with the World Through Creativity | HWA MYP Visual Arts Immersive Learning Journey

Art is not simply something to be observed — it is a way to express ideas, develop perspectives, and explore the world around us.

Recently, HWA International School’s Grade 7-10 MYP Visual Arts students stepped beyond the classroom and visited the immersive exhibition David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) at IMBA Theatre in Gardens by the Bay, embarking on a unique artistic journey that connected space, technology, and creativity.

Rather than simply viewing artworks from a distance, our students immersed themselves in the world of art through large-scale digital projections, spatial soundscapes, and interactive environments. They experienced six decades of artistic innovation by David Hockney, exploring how colour, perspective, and technology can transform the way we experience art.

For our Grade 7 & 8 students, this visit connected closely with their current inquiry “Art, Identity & Technology.” Through observing how Hockney uses digital tools, such as iPad paintings, to reimagine traditional artistic practices, students explored how technology influences creative expression and how digital interventions can reshape the mood, meaning, and identity within an artwork.

Meanwhile, Grade 9 & 10 students took their learning further by examining the relationship between perception and reality. They explored how large-scale environmental artworks, traditional artistic techniques, and modern media can come together to create powerful visual experiences. Through analysing scale, colour, and composition, students discovered how artists capture the energy and emotions of natural landscapes.

At HWA, we believe meaningful learning extends far beyond the classroom.

Through the IB MYP programme, students are encouraged to become Inquirers and Thinkers — developing curiosity, making real-world connections, and creating their own understanding through exploration and reflection.

Every journey outside the classroom is an opportunity to learn.
Every artistic experience is a chance for students to discover themselves and understand the world in new ways.

Welcoming First Moscow Gymnasium to HWA International School

We were pleased to welcome representatives from First Moscow Gymnasium to our campus once again.

Following an earlier visit, this latest meeting provided an opportunity to continue discussions and strengthen the relationship between our two schools. During the visit, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a framework for future communication and collaboration.

The exchange allowed both institutions to share perspectives on education, student development, and international learning environments, while exploring areas of mutual interest.

At HWA International School, we value opportunities to engage with educators and institutions from different cultural and educational backgrounds, supporting dialogue, exchange, and international understanding within our learning community.

We thank the delegation from First Moscow Gymnasium for their continued engagement and look forward to future exchanges.

At HWA International School’s CCA programme, students transformed colourful craft materials into unique handmade creations. From adorable animals to imaginative original designs, each piece reflects their creativity, focus, and growing confidence in expressing ideas.

CCA activities go beyond hobbies—they provide meaningful opportunities for students to develop problem-solving skills, innovative thinking, and self-expression. At HWA, we believe learning happens not only in the classroom but also through exploration, experimentation, and creation.

A big well done to our young creators! We look forward to seeing even more wonderful ideas come to life.

In the IB Learner Profile, being Reflective refers to the ability to thoughtfully examine one’s own learning and experiences. It is not simply about looking back, but about actively analyzing actions, decisions, and outcomes in order to improve and grow.
Within the International Baccalaureate learning environment, this attribute is often demonstrated through how students understand their learning processes. For example, after completing a project, participating in a discussion, or engaging in collaboration, students are encouraged to consider what was effective, what could be improved, and how their perspectives may have evolved.
Through this process, learners gradually develop greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of how they learn best.
Being Reflective, therefore, is not merely about summarizing experiences, but about continuously refining one’s thinking and learning approaches.
Why does the IB place such strong emphasis on being Reflective? In the next post, we will explore this from the perspective of IB’s educational philosophy.
