IB Learner Profile – 03: Knowledgeable: Learning for a Changing

In the previous two posts, we explored the meaning and educational foundations of the Knowledgeable attribute within the IB Learner Profile.

At a deeper level, being Knowledgeable is about more than acquiring information—it is about developing understanding and exploring how knowledge can be applied in different contexts within an ever-changing world.

Within the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, learners are encouraged to explore issues from multiple perspectives, recognise connections between ideas, and engage in learning as an ongoing process.

As students encounter different cultures, disciplines, and global issues, they are encouraged to ask questions, remain open to new ideas, and consider evidence when developing their understanding.
Being Knowledgeable is therefore not simply about what students know today, but about cultivating curiosity, reflection, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

🏮 From Cultural Discovery to Student Presentation | HWA Summer School 2026

During the fifth week of HWA International School’s Summer School 2026, our students extended their learning beyond the classroom with an educational visit to the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC).

The visit provided students with an opportunity to explore aspects of Chinese culture and heritage through the Centre’s exhibitions and learning spaces. Students were encouraged to observe, ask questions, and identify cultural topics that particularly caught their attention.

The learning continued throughout the week. Following their visit, students selected a Chinese cultural tradition, figure, or topic that they found particularly interesting and explored it further as part of their learning activities.

On Friday, students took part in an IB-style presentation, sharing their chosen topics with their classmates and explaining what had captured their interest.

The presentations covered a variety of topics. Some students explored bak k*t teh, while others chose to learn more about Chinese musicians and music, as well as other aspects of Chinese traditions and cultural heritage.

Through this activity, students had opportunities to:

🔹 Explore a cultural topic connected to their own interests
🔹 Research and organise relevant information
🔹 Reflect on their experience at the SCCC
🔹 Communicate their ideas through a student presentation
🔹 Listen to and learn from different topics explored by their classmates
🔹 Consider different aspects of Chinese culture and heritage

The activity reflected an IB-style approach to learning, encouraging students to take an active role in their learning, explore questions, make connections, and communicate their understanding.

At HWA International School, we value opportunities for students to connect learning experiences with real-world cultural contexts. By combining an educational visit with student-led exploration and presentation, students were able to continue developing their understanding beyond the initial museum experience.

Exploring Chinese Culture | HWA Summer School 2026

During the fifth week of our HWA Summer School 2026, our students had the opportunity to visit the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC).

The visit provided students with an opportunity to explore aspects of Chinese culture and heritage through the Centre’s exhibitions and learning spaces. Students observed and explored different cultural elements, gaining exposure to perspectives and experiences beyond the classroom.

Through the visit, students had opportunities to:

Exploring Artificial Intelligence: A Special Learning Session with SUSS

Our MYP and DP students recently had the opportunity to take part in a special learning session focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), delivered in collaboration with the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

The session introduced students to key concepts related to AI and encouraged them to explore how emerging technologies can connect with different areas of learning, business, and everyday life.

Through discussions, activities, and collaborative tasks, students explored how AI can be considered when developing ideas and solutions. They were encouraged to think about how technology can create value while also considering questions around responsible use, ethics, and potential risks.

Students had opportunities to work through different stages of an AI-focused learning process, including exploring potential applications of AI, considering users and their needs, developing ideas, and thinking about how AI could be incorporated into a proposed solution.

The session also highlighted the importance of critical thinking and responsible decision-making when engaging with emerging technologies. Students were encouraged to consider not only what AI can do, but also how and when it should be used.

These learning experiences support the development of skills such as:

Following the visit, students selected an artefact or exhibition element that particularly caught their attention and explored why it interested them. They then prepared and delivered a presentation on Friday, sharing their observations and ideas with their classmates.

The presentation was inspired by an IB-style approach to learning, encouraging students to communicate their thinking, explain their perspectives, and reflect on what they had discovered during the museum visit.

Through this process, students had opportunities to:

🔹 Select and explore an object that interested them
🔹 Reflect on their museum experience
🔹 Organise and communicate their ideas
🔹 Listen to different perspectives from their classmates
🔹 Connect a real-world cultural experience with their learning

At HWA International School, we value opportunities for students to take an active role in their learning. Combining an educational visit with a student-led presentation allows them to continue exploring a topic after returning to the classroom and share their learning with others.

IB Learner Profile – 02: Knowledgeable: Connecting Learning Across

In our previous post, we introduced the Knowledgeable attribute and its importance within the IB Learner Profile.

But what does being Knowledgeable look like in everyday learning?
Throughout the IB programme, students are encouraged to explore ideas across different subject areas and recognise how knowledge is connected. Whether investigating scientific concepts, analysing historical events, creating artistic works, or exploring mathematical concepts, learning provides opportunities for students to make meaningful connections across disciplines.

Through inquiry-based learning, students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate evidence, and apply their understanding in different contexts.

These learning experiences invite students to explore concepts from multiple perspectives and connect classroom learning with the world around them.

Developing the Knowledgeable attribute is about more than acquiring information. It encourages students to value learning as an ongoing process of inquiry, understanding, and reflection while appreciating how knowledge can be applied in different contexts.

A New School Year Begins at HWA International School!

Today marks the first official day of the new academic year, and we are delighted to welcome both our new and returning students back to HWA!

A new school year brings new beginnings, new connections, and opportunities to learn and grow together.

At HWA, students learn within a bilingual English-Chinese and IB environment, engaging with different subjects, perspectives and learning experiences alongside their classmates.

As students settle into their new routines, the beginning of the school year also provides opportunities to build connections and a sense of belonging among students, teachers and classmates.
