Computer Science is one of the fastest growing, high-paying career fields in the world. As technology plays an increasingly important societal role, it is critical for everyone to have an understanding of the broader field of Computational Thinking - not just to create technology, but to apply its problems solving approaches to any challenge, in any career field.
UCode SG Offers: Computational Thinking Assessment by the Computational Thinking Institute (US)
The Computational Thinking Assessment offers an independent, objective means to measure a student’s learning and achievements in this field, not with a singular grade, but a means of continually evaluating a student’s progressive advancement across over 250 skill objectives along 10 different Computational Thinking skill areas.
The assessment questions can be arranged to fit to a Computer Science educational program's curriculum, and can be taken all at once, or preferably as a series of smaller exams to provide more regular feedback, and less "big exam" stress.
With every assessment, the results are simple to interpret and provide meaningful feedback to students, parents, and educators on the student’s progression, motivating them to continue on their educational journey. Students may take and retake parts of the assessment to demonstrate how much they have grown, identify where confidence issues or misconceptions may lie, all while earning cumulative points instead of grades.
After years of work to help address the unanswered needs in K-12 Computer Science education that were identified as a part of United States President Obama's Computer Science for All (CS4All) initiative, the Computational Thinking Institute, developed under the leadership of Dr. David R. Schneider, draws from the work of Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the Computer Science and Principles of Computer Science Advance Placement Exams (AP), and the curriculum of over 80 introductory college computer science courses as well as numerous K-12 computer science programs to create the Computational Thinking Assessment we have today.
UCode SG welcomes schools and educators to partner with us to make computational thinking skills available to all.

As our global economy grows more focused on information and less focused on manufacturing, computational thinking is becoming an essential skill for learners to possess. While computational thinking is founded in computer science, it can be universally applied to any subject, including literature, economics, mathematics, chemistry and others. No matter what you are most interested in, thinking like an engineer can help you excel.
Computational thinking is a new development in problem solving that is changing how we learn and how employees can overcome challenges in the workplace. Jeannette Wing, a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon, introduced the term “computational thinking “ in March 2006 in an article in a leading information technology journal.
In her article, Wing described it as “computational methods and models that give us the courage to solve problems and design systems that no one of us would be capable of tackling alone.” She also said that it “involves solving problems, designing systems, and understanding human behavior, by drawing on the concepts fundamental to computer science.”
In short, computational thinking is a process that makes the toughest challenges more manageable. And, while it draws on concepts fundamental to computer science, it can be used to solve a wide range of problems in a number of different subject areas and industries.
That’s why computational thinking is such an important skill for today’s learners.
What Exactly is Computational Thinking?
According to Wing, computational thinking is,
Not programming: Computational thinking requires thinking at “multiple levels of abstraction” rather than simply the ability to program.
Not memorization: She envisioned computational thinking as a skill that all humans will someday need to master if they want to function in modern society.
Instead, it is a way that humans, not computers, think: Computational thinking is a problem-solving method that captures a human’s imagination and creativity that computers cannot replicate.
Today’s Students Need Computational Thinking for Tomorrow’s World
The world and the global economy are changing around us. For the bulk of the 20th century, we lived in a manufacturing economy — one in which the creation, distribution and sale of goods created jobs. But the 21st century and its advances in technology have created an information economy — one in which knowledge and skills are the currency rather than goods produced in a factory or on an assembly line.
Because of this shift from a manufacturing to an information economy, today’s students must learn differently and develop different skills than students of just a few years ago. The economy is now driven by information and knowledge, and jobs in all industries require more advanced skills — skills that include the ability to think computationally.
Take a first step toward thinking computationally with UCode SG.
