Train safe, fight smart

31/03/2026

Hi folks, this is the training schedule for April and May.

I have surgery in mid April, so 15th to 29th April are tentative days. The studio should still be open for training.

If I can be there, even in a sling, I will be.

See you in training! βš”οΈ

Hi folks, I am currently nursing some gym related injuries (torn hip and torn thumb ligament). My medical reviews and treatment are still ongoing, so I haven't been online much.

But business is as usual. The folks are still training, while I coach from the sidelines. This is expected to continue until the end of this year.

The moment I leave the HEMA studio, I seem to lose all protective buffs and am 50% more injury prone from random divine interference. ⚑πŸ’₯🩼

Idea for an entry requirement for tournaments to promote safer fencing: The Pumpkin Test πŸŽƒ

If a pumpkin survives your hits (see slides for criterion), you pass and are allowed to compete, with the expectation that the level of force you use in all your bouts is the same as what you can demonstrate on the pumpkin.

This is not a fully fleshed out idea or properly codified scoring system for a tournament/event (yet), but it is worth consideration. At the very least, it will make a fun game.

Swing fast, land light, have fun, exhibit skill, do no harm.

Note: The Pumpkin Test is conducted with blunt and flexible sword simulators. This is not a cutting test with sharp swords.

Some people go to the gym.

Welcome to HEMA β€” Historical European Martial Arts, where history, adrenaline, and serious technical skill collide.

Every bout is a test of skill, patience, and the pure thrill of stepping into a fight where brains and brawn matter. πŸ›‘οΈπŸ”₯ 26/04/2025

When you get a fencer who is sleep deprived (look at my eye circles 🐼), who is highly caffeinated, and asked to give an interview about HEMA, you get the manic sword goblinπŸ‘Ή

I help people make new friends and tickle each other with swords. βš”οΈπŸ»

βš”οΈ Leon and Hafiz suit up, grab their longswords, and attempt to stab each other (safely, of course).

Who will emerge victorious, and who will be left questioning their life choices?

The folks at We Are Majulah popped by for a visit! They picked up swords for the very first time and went to battl- ahem, they went for training!

No editors were harmed in the making of this video. Please don't try this at home - come down to SLAY at the Oriflamme HEMA Club βš”οΈπŸ»βš”οΈ

"Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you."

So the Jingle Pellβ„’ was supposed to have been completed last Christmas, in time for the Season's Beatings, but my time was taken up with work and family, so here it is now, in March 2025.

You can add a small piece of sponge or pool noodle into the pipe before inserting the post, if you want a taller pell. Mine is around 160 cm with just the log.

I had the log planed with an octagonal cross section so the pipe would fit easier, but not cause the tube to rotate when hit.

I drilled a hole into the PVC cap as well, in case the log got stuck in it, so I could push it out with a broom handle. Thanks for the suggestion, G, and for letting me use your tools and space!

Note: If you want your Jingle Pellβ„’ to actually jingle, you will need to add your own bells. Mine clinks occasionally, because I have secured my weights to the base using a chain.

My Jingle Pellβ„’ was designed with storage in mind, so it is not the most sturdy or stable of pells, but it is holding up relatively well so far, thanks to the tape, though we did manage to put a few notches into it (more tape will help). I did intend for it to be ablative anyway, for the folks to train how to properly follow through in their strikes.

P.S. I hope y'all managed to fence your mistle-foe last Christmas! πŸŽ„βš”οΈπŸ’₯

Our patches are in! πŸ”₯βš”οΈπŸ”₯

I tried to burn off some loose threads on one of them and accidentally singed it! Which is very on brand, I suppose. πŸ˜‚

Frustrating, yet hilarious. I love y'all. βš”οΈπŸ’₯πŸ€•
