Ever feel like you want to practise guitar⊠but the motivation just isnât there? đž
Youâre not necessarily lazy or âbad at practising.â Sometimes, youâre simply bored with your routine. Here are a few ways to make picking up your guitar feel exciting again:
1. Learn something you actually like
You donât always have to practise scales or exercises. Pick a song you genuinely enjoy and learn a section of it. Having something youâre excited to play can make practice feel much less like a chore.
2. Lower the bar!!
Donât tell yourself you need to practise for an hour. Start with 10-15 minutes. When the task feels too big, we often dread starting at all
3. Work towards tiny goals
Instead of âI need to get better at guitar,â try something specific like just learning the chorus or playing a chord change without stopping. Small wins make practice feel rewarding.
4. đž Stop practising the same way every time
Try playing along to a backing track, improvising, learning a riff, writing your own chord progression, or even just messing around with different sounds. You donât always have to sit down with a score.
5. Listen before you playđ§
Put on the song youâre learning and really listen to the guitar part. Try to figure out what itâs doing before picking up your guitar. You might notice rhythms, techniques, or little details you didnât hear before.
