"Why did I get it wrong? I understood the whole passage."

This is a common reaction after Compre Cloze practices.

Many students assume that understanding the passage is enough. However, Compre Cloze often requires students to do more than understand meaning.

Students must also recognise how words naturally combine to form expressions and how language is typically used in context.

This is why a student may understand every sentence in a passage yet still lose marks when selecting an answer.

The expressions featured in this post are compiled from past-year Compre Cloze sections and highlight some of the common word pairings and language patterns that frequently appear in exam papers.

Developing familiarity with these patterns helps students make more accurate choices. In our lessons, students are guided to analyse these patterns and understand how different clues work together within a passage.

As the second half of the year approaches, many parents are using the June holidays to strengthen weaker Paper 2 components before the next round of assessments.

Our June holiday programmes provide structured practice across key exam areas. Oral courses are also available. All classes are taught by MOE-trained teachers only.

Certain themes appear repeatedly in PSLE Oral, which is why students benefit from being familiar with topic-specific language.

However, in the exam, it is not enough to simply β€œknow” these words. Students also need to understand how to use them within a response. When used well, students will be able to express their ideas more precisely.

In our Oral classes, these expressions are not taught as standalone vocabulary lists. Instead, students encounter them through model responses, where key words and phrases are highlighted in context to show how they can be used in answers.

This helps students understand:
β€’ how ideas are developed using precise vocabulary
β€’ how responses can be "upgraded" to the next grade when the right vocabulary is used
β€’ how to apply expressions rather than memorise them in isolation

Over time, this builds greater familiarity with both the language and the structure needed for stronger Oral responses.

Our upcoming Oral Workshops and Masterclasses focus on strengthening both Reading Aloud and SBC through structured practice and guided application.

Paper 2 workshops are also available. All classes are conducted by MOE-trained tutors only.

With the PSLE Oral exam approaching in August, our upcoming Oral classes will be the final sessions before the exam.

By this stage of the year, many students already know the common Oral techniques. The challenge is applying them consistently when faced with unfamiliar questions and under exam conditions.

Some students still struggle to:
β€’ develop their ideas fully during SBC
β€’ support their opinions with relevant examples
β€’ apply Reading Aloud techniques within the short preparation time

Our Oral workshops are designed to give students focused practice in these areas, while refining the techniques needed for the examination.

We are also encouraged by the response to our Oral Masterclass 2 programme. All our weekend classes are now fully booked, and students in the programme will continue practising and refining their Oral skills through to the exam.

For parents who are looking to give their child additional support before the Oral exam, details of the upcoming workshops and remaining Masterclass slots are shown below.

The June holidays are often the point where many parents begin noticing which areas are still affecting their child’s performance.

For some students, it may be:
– knowing the content but struggling to apply techniques accurately
– inconsistent scores in WAs and practice papers
– difficulty developing ideas clearly during Oral

As the second half of the year approaches, these gaps often become more noticeable.

Our upcoming June workshops are designed to give students focused revision and structured, exam-based practice in Paper 2 and Oral components.

At the same time, our PSLE Oral Masterclass 2 will begin in Term 3, leading up to the Oral exam in August. As many parents are already planning ahead for the exam period, classes have been filling progressively.

For students who would benefit from more targeted support before the exam season intensifies, schedules for our June Workshops and Oral Masterclasses are shown below.

β€œCompre Cloze feels so unpredictable.”

This is something parents often hear after WA papers are returned.

In Compre Cloze, students are frequently told to β€œlook for clues”, but many are still unsure what these clues actually look like.

One commonly tested clue type involves fixed expressions and natural word pairings. This is where many students begin to lose marks, even when they understand the passage.

They may know the meaning of the sentence, yet struggle to select the word that naturally fits the context.

The phrases in this post are compiled from past-year Compre Cloze sections to help students become more familiar with patterns that frequently appear in exams.

Without this familiarity, students often have nothing to fall back on, which can lead to inconsistent answers.

In our lessons, students are trained to recognise different clues and analyse how words fit naturally within context, so they move away from guesswork and towards more accurate application.

With the June holidays approaching, this is also a key period where many parents begin strengthening weaker components before the second half of the year.

For students who are still finding Compre Cloze inconsistent, our June holiday programmes focus on building these skills through structured, exam-based practice.

Oral and other Paper 2 courses are also available. All classes are taught by MOE-trained teachers only.

One of the clearest signs that a student has truly understood a skill is when they begin applying it independently.

A parent from our Oral Masterclass recently shared this with us after her daughter completed an Oral practice on her own and organisied her ideas using techniques taught during lessons.

What stood out to us was that she was able to apply the techniques on her own, without prompting.

Oral is not about memorising model answers. Many students can repeat ideas they have heard or read, but struggle when faced with unfamiliar questions in the exam.

The real difference comes when students recognise how to organise and develop their responses independently under exam conditions.

This transfer of learning is what helps students become more confident, adaptable, and consistent over time.

In our Oral lessons, students are guided step by step to develop and organise their responses clearly, and apply these techniques across different themes β€” so they learn not just what to say, but how to think through their answers.

We are heartened by the improvements of our students and thankful for the continued trust and support from parents πŸ’–

β€œI know what to say… I just don’t know how to say it.”

This is something many students struggle with in Oral Stimulus-Based Conversation (SBC).

Some students have ideas, but their answers end up being too short, repetitive, or difficult to follow. Others struggle to even get started, especially when faced with unfamiliar topics.

In both cases, the issue may not always be about ability, but how their responses are developed and structured under exam conditions.

Without a clear approach, students may:
– give very brief answers
– repeat the same point
– or miss opportunities to build their ideas fully

One way we guide students is to use our SEEE strategy.

This helps students organise their thoughts and develop more complete responses.

That said, knowing the structure is one thing. Applying it clearly and confidently during the exam is another.

In our lessons, students practise using this framework across different question types, and are guided in generating and developing ideas, so they become more confident in responding under timed conditions.

For students who either struggle to come up with ideas, or have ideas but cannot express them clearly, this is often the missing piece.

Our PSLE Oral classes focus on building these skills step by step.
Paper 2 classes are also available.

Our PSLE Oral Masterclass 2 will be starting in June, leading up to the PSLE Oral exam in August.

With Masterclass 1 currently ongoing, we are seeing students become more confident in developing their responses with consistent practice.

Our Sunday 2pm class is now fully booked with a waitlist, so we have opened an additional Sunday 1.30pm class to accommodate more students.

Some parents have also chosen to secure a place in Masterclass 2 early after seeing their child’s progress in the current lessons.

For parents who are planning ahead for the PSLE Oral exam, it would be advisable to secure your slot early!

β€œMy child has seen the word before… but still spells it wrongly.”

This happens more often than parents expect.

By now, most students have been exposed to many of these words.
The difficulty lies in recalling the correct spelling consistently.

This list is compiled from the Editing sections of past year papers, including words that are repeatedly tested.

What often makes the difference is not just exposure, but how well these spellings have been reinforced through deliberate, repeated use in context.

Many students recognise the word, but hesitate when they need to produce it accurately on their own, especially under exam conditions.

In our lessons, students revisit commonly-tested words across different contexts, so that correct spelling becomes more automatic and reliable over time.

For students who are still making avoidable mistakes, more structured practice can help improve both accuracy and confidence.
All classes are taught by MOE-trained teachers only.

Our PSLE Oral Masterclass 2 will be starting in June, leading up to the PSLE Oral exam in August.

This phase focuses on helping students refine their responses through consistent practice, so they are able to speak more clearly, develop their ideas more fully, and apply the techniques with greater confidence.

As Masterclass 1 is currently ongoing, our classes have already filled, and the Sunday slot for Masterclass 2 is also nearing full capacity.

A new Tuesday class has been opened to accommodate additional students.

For parents who are planning ahead for the Oral exam, this would be a good time to secure a slot.
