At our Annual Recital last year, Yohan, guided by our contemporary specialist, Rayhan, stepped into the world of R&B and soul for the first time, discovering a sound that felt unexpectedly his own.

I originally came across this song from The Voice, where judges Sir Tom Jones and Jennifer Hudson sang their own rendition of it. That exposed me into this realm of R&B/soul, which i had rarely tried out.

After consulting with Rayhan, my voice coach, I realised how comfortable this genre was for my voice, and how my natural stylistic choices were a good match with R&B. We soon settled with Seals version of this song, because the arrangement and the passion with which he sang, resonated with me.

As I am naturally a bass singer, singing in the original key for the song wasn't exactly easy. But with Rayhan's help, we actually flipped the scales, focusing more on my lower range, with occasionally high register segments for contrast, which i found to be quite interesting and not something i had considered doing in songs and covers.

One of the main goals I had from this piece was to play with creative freedom. I found there to be a lot of "space" in each phrase of the song, contrary to other genres where there are more lyrics packed into the same melody. Through trial and error myself and Rayhan found what worked and what didn't, and what could be used in the final performance.

Our lovely young student, Gavrel, moved hearts with his performance of “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri at The Voice Company’s Annual Recital last year 🤍✨

With sincerity, warmth, and a tender sense of storytelling, Gavrel brought a beautiful calm to this well loved song, drawing the audience into every moment. A special mention to his vocal coach, , whose guidance has supported Gavrel in developing his confidence, vocal expression, and stage presence.

Our student, Anirudh Anand , delivered an evocative and sincere performance of “From the Jump” at our annual student recital last year, accompanied on the piano by his teacher, Ms Freda.

Anirudh brought a wonderful balance of intensity and vulnerability to this performance, and continues to deepen his storytelling and musical sensitivity through his training with us.

We are excited for Anirudh to continue to grow as a performer with Ms Freda, gaining confidence and depth in his artistry with each step of his journey.

Our 15 year old student Conor Maguire brought his own colour to “Chi Vuol La Zingarella” at our annual recital last year!

Venturing into classical repertoire in a foreign language is no small feat and Conor embraced the challenge with energy and expressive flair. It’s always a joy watching our young singers step beyond their comfort zones and discover new genres and facets of their voice.

We’re ending the week on a beautiful note with our student Phoebe McPhail’s heartfelt rendition of "My Days" from the musical, The Notebook 🤍✨

Phoebe brings such sincerity and emotional depth to this piece, and it’s been a joy watching her grow in both confidence and storytelling through song.
