Harvesting Daikon Radishes!拔萝卜. Daikon and wombok are the two major winter veggies for Northeast Chinese people in the past. We used to gather piles of them and store in underground cellar. There are pink, green, white daikons. This year I grew lots of white ones. And had a few greens ones (looking healthy at the moment). They are super easy to grow. Sowed in early April, thinned out (I think 20cm gap is ideal. I did 10cm and it was a bit crowded). Harvest in July. Great to be made into pickles and ferments. Great in a soup or stir fried. I might make some tumeric daikon ferments for this Saturday’s Ferment The Season workshop. Feeling excited!

To our 2nd anniversary: “First two years were a blur.” ——FP
This lovely card from Carey’s mother reminded us of this important date to celebrate. Honestly, I think that after 2 years (out of which 14 months were spent physically together thanks to COVID), we have only entered ‘honeymoon’ recently. This idea of a big wedding and a honeymoon is such a strange romanticised concept. The first few months of living together is probably going to be the 2nd hardest time in an intimate relationship (I reserve the 1st price to the first 3 months with a baby). I call this the grinding period. In fact, relationship experts have found that the majority of problems between couples come from the ‘housemate’ roles, not any other ones. Interesting ha?
I often tell my friends who haven’t married, have intentions to get married, that marriage is one path of spiritual growth that you choose - to struggle, to work, to suffer, to learn, with THIS person. It is only one path. You can choose other paths. Marriage doesn’t happen when you meet the magical ONE. It happens when YOU have come to the spiritual-developmental stage that calls for such a new journey. You embark on this journey. Then it happens.
In the past 2 years I witnessed the transformation in myself and my husband, from superficial things such as a joint bank account to much deeper things, such as SERVICE, OPENING UP, ACCEPTING ONESELF, BEING ABLE TALKING ABOUT SH*TS… I am glad that I have this chance to witness all these and much more to come.
My gratitude towards my love, Carey, his family, my family, and all the people who have generously supported us over the past few years, who listened to me crying for hours about the separation, who stopped me from jumping ships, who helped me integrate to the new country, who helped us build this humble home on the Mornington Peninsula… My friends, I know you are there, and I am so happy.
Love and peace,
Siyao

I have been missing hotpot beef slices since I moved to Australia. Only recently I learned that those hotpot beef that I had in China were fake. They were artificially layered with fat. That’s why there is no fresh hotpot beef. Only frozen one. Today I cut open some intercostal strips from Torello. 😲Look at this beautiful naturally layered fat! Another home-sick tummy warmer ❤️
