Many students, their parents and even instructors have asked, "What Does It Mean to Be a Shihan (師範) in Kyokushin Karate?"

In Kyokushin Karate, the title Shihan (師範) is one of the highest forms of recognition a teacher can receive. It is not just a rank, but a reflection of a lifetime of dedication, character, and service.

1. What “Shihan” Means

The Japanese word Shihan (師範) means “a teacher who sets the standard.”
In simple terms, a Shihan is someone who is not only highly skilled, but also trusted to represent the values and spirit of Kyokushin Karate.

A Shihan is expected to be a role model—both in the dojo and in daily life.

---

2. Why the Title Is So Rare

Kyokushin Karate is known for its honesty, discipline, and high standards. Because of this, the title of Shihan is not given easily or quickly, attainment of black belt in itself is already arduous.

Only a very small number of practitioners ever reach this level, even among black belts. The title is reserved for those who have consistently demonstrated excellence over many years.

---

3. The Time and Effort Required

Reaching the level of Shihan typically takes 25 to 35 years or more of continuous training.

This journey includes:

1. Regular, demanding physical training over decades

2. Progression through many levels of black belt examinations

3. Years of teaching and mentoring students

4. Running and supporting dojos and community activities

5. Balancing training with family, work, and personal responsibilities

6. Attendance at international events

It is a long-term commitment that requires perseverance, humility, and sacrifice.

---

4. More Than Physical Skill

A Shihan is not recognised only for strength or fighting ability.

The title reflects:

1. Strong moral character and self-discipline

2. The ability to teach safely, responsibly, and effectively

3. Respect for tradition and proper conduct

4. A commitment to developing students as people, not just athletes

Parents can be assured that a Shihan is someone entrusted with guiding students in both martial skill and personal development.

---

5. A Responsibility, Not a Reward

In Kyokushin, becoming a Shihan is not the end of a journey—it is the beginning of a greater responsibility.

A Shihan is expected to:

1. Maintain high standards of teaching

2. Preserve the values and traditions of Kyokushin Karate

3. Guide future instructors

4. Act as a steady and positive influence in the community

As the founder of Kyokushin, Mas Oyama, taught:

「空手は人生の道である」
Karate is a way of life.

To be recognised as a Shihan (師範) means being entrusted with passing on that Kyokushin philosophy to future generations.

Congratulations to all members who were successfully emplaced to the next higher rank.

Also heartening to know that behind every member is a encouraging, motivating and supportive family.

In so many photo, we see the joy and pride of parents as they don new belts for their children.

Nothing makes instructors more proud than seeing how karate when position strategically can be a family bonding activity.

In IKOKS under Sonoda Kaicho 園田直幸会長, we are family first💖, karate second.
