🌟 Threads of Unity 2.0: Celebrating Community Through Creativity 🌟

On 16 August, Hwa Chong Institution’s High School Wushu Team, Calligraphy Club and Project Pawsitive took part in “Threads of Unity 2.0” at Toa Payoh Central Open Space, organised by HUG Community Services Limited (HCSL). The event was graced by Guest of Honour Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister for National Development. ✨

👗 “Threads of Unity 2.0” celebrates resilience, creativity and belonging, bringing seniors, youths, desistor volunteers and community partners together through fashion, performances and shared experiences. Our students were proud to be part of this meaningful celebration, using their talents to connect with the community, share their creativity and contribute to an event that reminds us that everyone deserves to be seen, valued and supported. ❤️

Our Wushu Team energised the event with a spectacular performance, showcasing their discipline, skill and vibrant spirit. 💪

Members of our Calligraphy Club prepared personalised calligraphy bookmarks for residents, sharing the beauty of Chinese calligraphy while creating meaningful keepsakes for the community. 🖌️

Project Pawsitive brought some furry volunteers to the runway, adding a playful and heartwarming touch to the fashion showcase and bringing smiles to the community. 🐶

Through their participation, our students had the opportunity to connect with residents, contribute their talents and experience the joy of giving back to the community.

We are proud of our students for using their talents to build connections, spread joy and strengthen our community bonds. 💙

From 17 to 21 August 2026, Hwa Chong Institution’s High School Well-Being Centre organised Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), creating space for students to pause, connect and reflect on the importance of mental well-being. 💜

Throughout the week, students took part in activities such as the Gratitude Wall, Gratitude Keychain and Terrarium workshops, Pet Therapy, as well as a two-day Carnival featuring games, activity booths and snacks. 🌱🐾🎪

Supported by Peer Support Leaders and parent volunteers from the Parent Support Group (PSG), the activities encouraged open conversations about mental health and reminded students of the importance of seeking support when needed.

As students prepared for the year-end examinations, MHAW offered a timely reminder to care for their own well-being while also looking out for those around them. 💛

🎯 On 12 August 2026, Hwa Chong Institution welcomed Olympic shooter Ms Adele Tan to our Secondary Two Assembly, where she shared insights from her journey as an elite athlete and coach.

A member of the National Shooting Team, Ms Tan spoke about the concentration, steadiness and peace of mind required in competitive shooting. She also reflected on the perseverance and discipline that helped her achieve medals at regional competitions and a 21st-place finish in the 10m Air Rifle event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Drawing from her experiences as both an athlete and coach at the Singapore Sports School, Ms Tan shared practical advice on handling pressure, setting realistic expectations and preparing both the body and mind for challenging situations. Students also learnt how habits such as proper nutrition, sufficient rest and even music can help manage stress and maintain focus. 🎵💪

During the lively Q&A session, students asked thoughtful questions ranging from competition strategies to mindset and personality. Ms Tan’s candid responses gave them a valuable glimpse into how elite athletes cope with setbacks, pressure and uncertainty.
Thank you, Ms Tan, for an inspiring and insightful sharing! 🌟

☕👮‍♂️ Coffee, conversations and crime prevention!

On 21 August, four officers from Kampong Java Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) Kampong Java NPC joined us at Hwa Chong Institution (High School) for “Coffee with a Cop” — a casual and engaging initiative by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to strengthen connections between the police and our community.

Over a cup of coffee at the canteen, our staff and students chatted with the officers and learned more about crime prevention and scam awareness. The informal setting provided a great opportunity for open conversations, meaningful exchanges and practical tips on staying safe.

Our NPCC cadets and Honorary VSC (School) Officer, Hon ASP (V) Ang Shi Da, also supported the SPF officers during the event. Together, we hope to build a more informed, vigilant and connected school community. 🤝

On 13 and 17 Aug 2026, we welcomed an exchange student from Herderschule in Gießen, Germany 🇩🇪🌍 as part of the Ministry of Education Language Centre’s (MOELC) Gießen Study-cum-Immersion Programme (SCIP). Over the two days, the German student experienced school life in Singapore, attending lessons together📚 with her Singaporean buddy and interacting with our students.

As part of the SCIP, Singapore students across multiple schools hosted German students from 6-20 August, exposing them to everyday life in Singapore. The Singapore students will then join their German exchange partners in Germany in November, allowing them to gain greater exposure to the German language and culture.

Beyond the two days in school, the German students immersed themselves in Singapore’s culture through a variety of activities, from visiting landmarks like the Singapore Flyer, Universal Studios and Singapore Zoo, to participating in heritage trails and exploring places such as Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown. They were even able to celebrate National Day and watch the fireworks🎆 with their Singapore buddies!

Through this programme, our students had the opportunity to learn more about German culture and lifestyle through interacting and exchanging stories with the German exchange students, forging new friendships🤝 and forming many valuable memories in the process.

Bis zum nächsten Mal!

On 20 August, we had the privilege of welcoming back two alumni, Toh En Yu Dylan and Javen Justin Suki, to speak with our High School students at the iSpark Term 3 assembly. Dylan, HCI’s 63rd President’s Scholar, and Javen, who served as President of both the High School and College Student Councils, returned to share candidly about resilience, setbacks and growth.

Stepping away from the usual success stories, they spoke openly about failure. Drawing from their own experiences, as well as sharing practical advice and memorable quotes, both speakers reflected on how setbacks had shaped their journeys and contributed to the people they are today.

One message that stood out was: “Don’t count on your successes, don’t think your failures are fatal.” They highlighted the importance of seeking help, taking time to process difficult emotions and staying grounded in moments of success. Ultimately, they reminded students that resilience lies in learning from setbacks and continuing to move forward. 💪

A big thank you to Dylan and Javen for offering such honest and thoughtful insights into failure. As our students head into the examination period, we hope they will remember that it is not flawless victories that define us, but how boldly we rise after we fall. 🌱✨
