Saturday well spent at SCCFSC 🧡🫶
Went down for a more unstructured session this Children’s Day 🎈We learnt the letter sound “i” before playing some phonics fishing games w the lil ones 🎣
We’re extremely heartened to see the older children help out with class prep ✂️ and look forward to engaging them as co-teachers this week 😊

Day 2 of learning at SCCFSC 🧡🫶
We used positive reinforcement (with the help of very cute animal stickers🐝) to get our kiddos used to listening to instructions and sitting down for a learning activity. It worked well!🚀
Really proud of our lil readers 😊

First session with the SCCFSC🧡🫶
Really great to see enthusiastic readers on a ⛅️ Saturday afternoon. It was also lovely to feel the passion and energy the community brings to inspire a love for reading in children 📚
Here, we’ll be doing storytelling, Jolly Phonics and mass activities to help children have fun and learn meaningfully. Stay tuned for more as we learn how to best learn with our lil readers 👩🏫
Thank you for joining us and for your support 🧡

Started our Phonics Learning Sessions with the kiddos of SCCFSC 🫶🧡
We’re really glad to have the parents and children journeying with us!! In these sessions, we will be using Jolly Phonics to impart early readers with the vital tools for 📖 reading and writing ✍️.
Pictured above are children hard at work - learning letter sound and letter formation for Ssss 🐍The enthusiasm to learn was really great to see 😊
Thank you for coming down and thank you for the support

That about wraps up our sessions at Punggol Waterway Terrace!🦦🌳🏘
This time, we had fun with “Just a Little Mynah”. We warmed up with a local bird call quiz (picture was not taken due to important activities), roleplayed with puppets 🦚🦜🪶 before imagining a space for all the birds to live together at Punggol Waterway. Thank you so much for your amazing puppets (also not pictured due to important child-related activities). The children (and adults) enjoyed playing around with them.
We are immensely grateful for the stories the children shared, the trust parents placed in us, and the new friendships 💕 we’ve forged in the neighbourhood. Also, very thankful for the volunteers who came down Saturday morning and evening to create these spaces with us. (.malubhoy, , ,.minx, , ,) I will never forget how we started out by handing out 900 flyers and camping at the void deck for the children⛺️.
sg started out as a passion project aimed at giving children the tools to manage their emotions. After this short stint, we’ve realised that children need safe spaces and trusted adults for these to happen. All these take time and listening🧏🏼♀️. We’re excited to bring these takeaways to our long term project with the children at SCCFSC!!

A Place For Us 🏡
Last Sunday, we explored how we could empathise with others through “Not So Scary After All” 😳. It was great fun seeing the children trying to look startled like Adam.
The children then created their own safe spaces for Adam - a boy who is immensely afraid of dogs 🐶.

Children activities require A LOT of cleaning up 🧼 🧹
Turn dreary routines 😞 ➡️ learning moments ✨ by involving children in the clean up 🧽. Children need to be specifically taught how to take care of their toys, space and tools 🧰 . We realised clean ups are great avenues for children (who just met each other) to work together at solving a problem! 💭
Some tips and tricks to get things moving 🚗 (we tested it):
- Simon says (should be done before clean up too)
- Breaking up the clean up into smaller tasks
(Inspired by our workshop with 6 - 8 year olds)

Age: 6-8
Giving children the liberty to create their own stories 🌈through different loose parts has been the best choice we’ve made! It was great fun 🥰 watching children (who have never met each other before) work together 🛠 to complete their own special creations.
Psst… here’s a tip. Don’t ask children the this question - “what are you making?” This creates unnecessary pressure on the child to verbally explain something that they might not be able to (yet). Remember to hold space for them tinker and explore as they deem meaningful ✨
For more of our sessions, we’ll be at Seng Kang 📖🌈 28th August for another afternoon of reading and activity. For this, we’ll be discussing more about our shifting emotional landscapes through “The House on Silat Road” 🏡

Learning doesn’t have to only happen in classrooms ✏️🧑🏫
For something as socially and culturally contextual as literacy, it is important for children to see the applicability of English learning in their daily lives 🌍

[Unstructured Learning📝]
For us, unstructured learning is play-based🛝, open-ended and children directed👶. While flexible, unstructured learning is still guided by clear and purposeful learning objectives!
We realised that children learn more social and emotional learning themes when given the liberty to express themselves freely 🗣 ! It was intuitive for them to start creating different objects and sharing their own stories when given loose parts like feathers 🪶 and beads. These moments of creation are also great avenues for children to learn social skills and problem solving as they explore what they can do with the objects together.
We’ll be trying out different ways of engaging children in the upcoming sessions 💜
Stay tuned!

[Sunday’s Sahara’s Special Senses 👁👅👃👂🤚]
We reconnected with our senses (unfortunately not taste) with Sahara’s Special Senses by last Sunday. Using different senses, the children expressed how they felt towards different loose parts - like themed sponges 🧽 foam balls and feathers🪶. Potpourri didn’t seem really popular amongst the children 🥲
More interestingly, for us, was how the children instantly created their own gadgets/ structures and shared stories about them ⚙️ This is in line with our goal to create spaces for children to express themselves!
