Help, My Primary School Child is Not Motivated to Study! - KiasuParents 03/02/2023

Motivation

Developing a child to have intrinsic motivation to attain a goal is important. Achieving success at a task often increases motivation to complete it. Ideally, the task that the child is required to do should be pegged just at a point where there is some challenge but success is achievable. Mobile games are notoriously able to match the players to opponents that have similar capabilities and provide rewards for success. The use of both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards here is what makes gaming so additive.

In the same way, we need to make academic tasks sufficiently challenging but not overly challenging for the child so that they are in a “Flow” state.

Great tips on how to read with your child !

Commentary: Parents, do you know how to play with your children? 07/01/2023

I read with great interest the commentary by Cynthia Lim from CNA about parents playing with their children; or rather, the lack of it.

The article exhorted the many benefits of play, and I was surprised why parents would choose not to do it.

Through play, appropriate behaviours and reactions to situations can be modelled to the child which allows them to gain confidence when dealing with similar real life situation.

Furthermore, interacting with an adult allows for greater exposure to higher quality language structure as well as vocabulary.

These parent and child interactions from a young age helps build a strong relationship with your children, which is something very important to have before the teenage years.

So parents, while it might be appealing to just sit back and relax with your device after a hard day’s work, engaging your child in some play activity; such as building a fire truck and having it save a kitten from a tree or just playing hide and seek would be something your child would love for you to do. The movement and laughter would be just as good for you too.

Commentary: Parents, do you know how to play with your children? Golden opportunities for learning are lost when parents focus only on the safety of their children and mediating sibling squabbles during playtime, instead of engaging with their little ones, says SUSS’ Dr Cynthia Lim.
