After decades of leadership in the aviation industry, many would consider a successful executive career to be the culmination of a life's work. For Dr. Faisal, however, leadership was never the destination - it was the beginning of asking deeper questions.

Rather than pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy for another academic credential, he returned to NUS at the age of 53 with a clear purpose: to acquire knowledge that could help organisations, industries and society better navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As a part-time candidate, Dr. Faisal completed his doctorate in just four years while balancing the demands of leadership at work and life as a grandfather at home.

Supply chains have always been a critical part of how businesses operate, but global disruptions in recent years reinforced Amilia's perspective on how interconnected and strategically important they are. Amilia wanted to develop a broader perspective of supply chain management and strengthen her knowledge beyond her area of specialisation. Ultimately, she decided to pursue the MSc Supply Chain Management programme at the National University of Singapore as a full-time student. It was a significant decision to step away from a stable career and enter a challenging job market upon graduation, but Amilia viewed it as a calculated investment in herself and her long-term growth.

✨Alumni Spotlight!✨

After graduating as the Valedictorian of the Mechanical Engineering Class of 2024 at NUS, Danielle was drawn to the bigger picture. She chose to pursue the Master of Science in Management of Technology and Innovation (MOTI) at NUS with the goal of developing the perspectives needed to operate at the intersection of technology, business and strategy.

Through real-world case studies, group projects and engagements with practitioners from both the private and public sector, Danielle gained an understanding of MOTI concepts including technology management and foresighting, intellectual property management and analytics and digital disruption strategies. For her outstanding performance in the programme, she was awarded the Tang Yuen Seng Prize.

Today, Danielle is a Senior Engineer with the Space Office at the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), where she supports project management and acquisition efforts that directly contribute to the development of Singapore's space capabilities. As space technologies and international collaborations continue to evolve, Danielle hopes to leverage the knowledge and insights gained through the MOTI programme to help shape technology decisions that strengthen Singapore's space capabilities.

Reflecting on her journey, Danielle shared:

"Engineering taught me to solve technical problems. MOTI challenged me to further consider the strategic dimensions that influence technology decisions. Together, they have shaped the way I aspire to bridge engineering and strategy as I contribute to Singapore's growing space ecosystem."

The NUS Energy and Decarbonisation Youth Programme gives students a glimpse into the energy transition and decarbonisation process across the economy as part of climate mitigation and sustainability efforts to get to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century.

The programme has entered its 3rd year. During the summer school holidays, junior college and secondary school students from Singapore participated in the programme from 24 to 26 June 2026. The programme has reached out to around 400 youths since it began in 2024 and is facilitated by Prof Ang Beng Wah and Dr Goh Tian from the ISEM Department. Over the three days, students worked on ideas to help different energy consuming sectors get to net zero in Singapore and pitched their ideas to a panel. They also went on a learning journey to Jurong Island to have a firsthand look at the refinery and chemicals sector and interact with industry experts working first-hand on the green transition.

✨Alumni Spotlight!✨

Shan Chunyu was primarily drawn to the Data Analytics (DA) specialization offered by the Master of Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program. During her career planning phase after her bachelor's degree, Chunyu realised that she had a strong passion for both data analytics and supply chain management. With the current boom in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models, Chunyu firmly believes that the deep integration of data science and supply chain is the future of the industry. In her opinion, the ISE program perfectly aligned with that vision. Additionally, the opportunity to participate in a credit-bearing internship was a major deciding factor for her, as it provided the chance to gain hands-on experience and bridge the gap between theory and industry application.

The ISE program provided a great balance of breadth and depth. Not limited to fundamental Industrial Engineering courses, it offered a diverse range of highly practical Data Analytics classes tailored to current industry trends. Exploring cutting-edge topics like forecasting methods, deep learning, and reinforcement learning was incredibly helpful; it gave Chunyu a solid grasp of the current AI landscape and its real-world applications. Beyond the comprehensive curriculum, the community was exceptional. Chunyu was grateful to meet incredibly supportive professors and peers who provided meaningful guidance for both her academic journey and career search.

Chunyu is currently working at Apple as a Global Supply and Sourcing Manager (GSSM) based in Shanghai. This role gives her the opportunity to apply both the hard analytical skills and the soft skills she has acquired during her master's studies to manage highly complex supply chain operations. The real-world industry is far more intricate than textbook scenarios. However, with the dynamic nature of her work, Chunyu is able to constantly navigate multiple complex tasks, prioritize them effectively, and maximize her efficiency to deliver high-quality results. The rigorous and fast-paced environment of her university life perfectly equipped her with the resilience and time-management skills needed to thrive in this profession.

Multi-center research has strengthened the generalizability and reproducibility of scientific findings, yet multi-site inference in modern distributed research networks remains constrained by privacy regulations, heterogeneous site characteristics, and the logistical burden of human-in-the-loop, multi-round communication. In this work, we distill these operational constraints into four mathematical requirements for practical distributed inference and introduce MOSAiC, a unified meta-algorithmic framework that addresses them simultaneously. MOSAiC leverages tensor-train tools from scientific computing to reframe distributed learning as a problem of multivariate function approximation, enabling one-shot communication, robustness to small or irregular sites, accuracy comparable to pooled analysis, and analytic submodel flexibility without additional queries. We demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of the approach through deployments across four institutions and applications in drug relabeling, drug repurposing, and post-market safety surveillance. Beyond these results, MOSAiC offers an operationally grounded foundation for designing next generation federated learning methods – one that aligns statistical rigor with the operational rhythms of real-world scientific collaboration and opens new directions for methodological innovation.
