Using eye gaze and head movements to make a tune or two?

Sounds extraordinary? You bet it is!

Designed by Zacharias Vamvakousis, the aim of EyeHarp is to enable people with physical disabilities to learn, play and express themselves via music.

As a music educator, I feel it is important to show our young ones that there is more to music than just practicing their instruments. It is vital that we also teach them to be grateful and enlighten them to different perspectives of learning music and what music really means to others.

What do you think of EyeHarp? Would love to hear your opinions!

THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

Learning to play and join music notes on a piano for a 4 YO does seem challenging at first.

But it’s not impossible.

Telling a child to join the notes won’t make sense to them.

Therefore, we need a different analogy when it comes to describing such concepts.

The “See-Saw” analogy works like a charm every time I need them to join the notes during playing.

It may take some time for their fingers to adapt to it.
From my experience, a majority of kids are able to do it by their 3rd lesson.
Some may need longer time but that’s okay!
Give them the time to integrate it.

[NOTE TO TEACHERS]

You're allowed to unlearn parts of you that don't align with who you are now.

Changes are important to us as it leads to self-growth especially in our field of work.

When we grow, it reflects in our teaching repertoire / methods and indirectly shows in student retention and enthusiasm.

Share this with a friend in need.

Teaching younger children online is not as easy.
As they have a shorter attention span, it is important that we switch between each activity quicker.
Each activity should only be around 3 - 5 minutes long.

Here are some tried and tested ideas that I have used in my practice and hope it will be useful to you as well!

It is alright if your lesson didn’t turn out the way you have planned.
Remember that you have done your best in every way and the kids adore you!!!

TIME OUT!!!!!

There are signs that a kid will exhibit when they need that short rest/music naps during lessons.

Here are some warning signs that you can look for :-

🎵Feeling frustrated/annoyed
🎵Can’t sit still/ restless
🎵Making mistakes in practice
🎵Difficulty focusing
🎵Some may start crying…...

Kids have short attention spans and as teachers we need to keep a lookout for these and spontaneously change our lesson plan / activities accordingly.

Share this with someone who needs it and save it for future use!
