Your child is doing well in Math. So, what’s next? 🧠✨

As Math progresses, knowing how to calculate is only part of the journey. The real challenge comes when children face an unfamiliar problem and have to decide:

“Where do I start?”
“Which strategy should I use?”

This is where exposure to different heuristics and problem-solving strategies becomes valuable — especially as children progress towards the more complex problem sums in upper primary and PSLE.

At S.A.M., we encourage children to go beyond simply getting the right answer. They learn to:

When Dad tries a Math question… and gets stuck!

We recently gave one of our parents a question from our programme.

He looked at it… thought about it… and then admitted:

“I have no idea where or how to start!” 🤔

And that’s exactly the point.

Sometimes, the challenge isn't the calculation — it's knowing how to approach the problem.

🧠 What information is important?
💡 Which strategy could work?
✏️ Where should I start?
🔄 Is there another way to solve it?

At S.A.M., children are exposed to different problem-solving approaches and heuristics, so they learn to think through unfamiliar questions instead of simply memorising a method.

Because when a question looks different from what they've practised, we want them to think:

“What can I try?”

rather than

“I don't know how to do this.”

And yes… Dad eventually got some help. 😉😂

A little National Day throwback from our S.A.M. students! ❤️🤍

Here's another way to think about it!

Look closely:

✅ 2 = 1² + 1
✅ 6 = 2² + 2
✅ 12 = 3² + 3
✅ 20 = 4² + 4
✅ 30 = 5² + 5

Can you see the pattern?

Each number is:
Square Number + The Same Number

So the next number is:

👉 6² + 6
👉 36 + 6
🎉 = 42

The amazing thing about mathematics is that there isn't always just one way to solve a problem.

Through different strategies, children learn to:
✨ Spot patterns
✨ Make connections
✨ Think logically
✨ Build confidence in problem solving

🧠 Solution 2: Can you spot the hidden pattern?

Sometimes, the best way to solve a math question isn't by calculating...

It's by looking at the relationships between the numbers. 👀

Look closely:

✅ 2 = 1 × 2
✅ 6 = 2 × 3
✅ 12 = 3 × 4
✅ 20 = 4 × 5
✅ 30 = 5 × 6

Did you notice it?

Each number is the product of two consecutive numbers.

So the next one is:

👉 6 × 7 = 42 🎉

There wasn't just one way to solve this question.

In fact, this is already Method 2!

At S.A.M., we encourage children to explore different strategies, recognise patterns, and explain their thinking—not just memorise steps.

💡 Because understanding why is just as important as getting the right answer.
