Polytechnics draw students from secondary schools, JCs and ITE through multiple pathways.

The three-year polytechnic route continues to be popular with young Singaporeans who are opting for different admission pathways opened up by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in recent years.

Students applying to the polytechnics range from secondary school leavers to junior college (JC) and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students.

MOE said that in 2023, around 21,100 students enrolled in full-time diploma courses across the five polytechnics – Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.

Explainer: Why is the UK planning to scrap the A-Levels and are there any implications for Singapore?

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Oct 4 plans to merge the country’s current A-Levels and T-Levels into a new, single education qualification called the Advanced British Standard.

ANY IMPLICATIONS FOR SINGAPORE?

Experts told TODAY that they do not foresee the reform having a significant impact on Singapore.

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) examination — introduced in 1975 — was decoupled from the UK’s GCE A-Level examination in 2002, said Dr Wong Hwei Ming, the assistant centre director of education at the National Institute of Education’s Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice at Nanyang Technological University.

This move was part of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) efforts to have “greater management of the administration of the examination”, she added.
