For many fresh graduates, leaving school brings familiar questions: Where do I fit in? What does a finance role involve? How can an accounting career develop across industries? One sector you may not immediately consider is maritime and shipping. As a global maritime hub, Singapore is home to shipping companies, port operators and maritime service providers that keep global trade moving.

Behind every vessel, shipment and business decision, accounting and finance professionals manage costs and cash flow, oversee financial reporting, support business planning and guide commercial decisions in a fast-moving global industry.

Supported by ISCA, this industry sharing event by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) offers aspiring accountants an inside look at the maritime sector and the career possibilities their skills can unlock beyond the classroom.

Hear from Mr Lek Tong Lim, General Manager, Finance & Treasury at Swire Bulk Pte. Ltd., and Ms Vivian Neo, Audit & Assurance Partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP, as they share their career journeys, real-world experiences and insights from over a decade in maritime finance.

Moderated by Dr Jiwei Wang, the session will explore how accounting and finance functions operate within the maritime sector and the career pathways available.

Partnering Student Services Consultancy (SSC) Tours & Travel, SMU School of Accountancy (SOA) Professional Hub co-organised the inaugural Global Immersion Competition@SMU from 28 June to 5 July this year. The programme hosted international students from around Asia, where they attended programmes and workshops designed to impart entrepreneurial, accounting, and strategic business competencies that foster innovation, and a readiness to develop and present viable business solutions.

The Global Immersion Competition@SMU presented an opportunity for the SOA Professional Hub to collaborate closely with industry partners on a programme that nurtures adaptability, innovation, and leadership across Asia. This inaugural collaboration highlights SOA’s hallmark of building impact in the accounting industry as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary milestone this year.

The Joint School Conference was held at Monash University in Melbourne this year, bringing together professors from SMU School of Accountancy (SOA) and Monash University to present their research papers, share their expertise, and exchange insights. Associate Dean (Research) of School of Accountancy, Associate Professor Yun Lou presented her paper on how innovation information frictions affect market outcomes and firm activities, and Assistant Professor Jungbae Kim presented his paper which examined whether individuals adjust their online professional profiles in response to corporate misconduct linked to their work histories.
