When your body is your instrument, the way you posture yourself affects your sound. Good singing posture has 2 major elements:
1) It has to be flexible enough to allow for expansion and optimal sound production
2) It has to be efficient, so that you are not expending any extra effort or creating excess tension
You'll want to pay attention to different parts of your body when singing:
Feet - Shoulder-width apart, under your hips, to create a nice solid foundation for your singing.
Knees - Maintain a nice loose position in your knees. You want to stay in a comfortable, loose position, so you can move with ease if needed.
Hips - Hip position directly relates to the knee position. You want to keep your hips in a slightly tucked position.
Chest - You want to keep your chest in an open position, to allow for the lung expansion required for singing.
Shoulders - Make sure to keep the shoulders low and back, to keep an open, flexible chest position while preventing the shoulders from rising up and creating tension.
Head - Proper head posture will allow you to maintain an efficient flow of air through your throat and prevent excess neck tension.

What you see here is a consonants diagram. All these symbols can seem confusing at first, but a lot of them are exactly the same as letters in the alphabet. If you look at the consonants in this colourful diagram, you’ll be able to make them out.
Starting with ‘spy’, try pronouncing the words in the diagram. Pay attention to how your lips and tongue move to produce the different consonantal sounds! 👄

Using the straw is a SOVT (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract) exercise. You can do this as part of your vocal warm ups! When the mouth is partially closed, increased back pressure reflects at the lips back to the vocal folds to help the folds vibrate with more ease and less effort.

Singing often requires us to express our emotions or the character’s emotions in the song! We don’t necessarily need to feel what the character feels, but we need to connect the emotion the character feels in that moment. The wheel of emotions shown above helps us break down and understand the wide variety of specific emotions, allowing us as singers to communicate the characters’ stories more effectively. 🤸🏻♀️
