After kids have a solid foundation in letters and letter sounds,
Short vowel words are the best place to start. Why short vowels? Because the patterns for short vowels are much more consistent than the patterns for long vowel words, making them easier to read and spell.

உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் :
தமிழ் மொழியில் மொத்தம் 12 உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் உள்ளன. இந்த எழுத்துக்களை vowels என்று ஆங்கிலத்தில் கூறுவர்.

குறில்:- அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ
இவற்றைக் குற்றெழுத்து என்றும் கூறுவர்.

நெடில்:- ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ, ஐ, ஓ, ஒள
இவற்றைக் நெட்டெழுத்து என்றும் கூறுவர்.

ஆய்த எழுத்து :
ஆய்த எழுத்தினைத் தனிநிலை என்றும்
கூறுவர்.

நெடில்:- ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ, ஐ, ஓ, ஒள ஆகிய ஏழும் நெடில்களாம். இவற்றை நெட்டெழுத்து என்றும் கூறுவர். இங்கே கூறப்பட்ட சில உயிர்கள் (ஐ, ஒள) தன் இயல்பான அளவிலிருந்து குறுகி ஒலிப்பதும் உண்டு.
ஆயுத எழுத்து :
தமிழில் உள்ள ஆயுத எழுத்துக்கள் மொத்தம் ஒரே ஒரு எழுத்து தான். இந்த எழுத்தை அக்கு என்று உச்சரிக்க வேண்டும். ஆய்த எழுத்தினைத் தனிநிலை என்றும் கூறுவர்.
