7 tips to create L&D that appeals to the modern learner
๐ก Get to know your people
Your first step as an L&D professional should be to get to know your people and their learning preferences. You may discover trends based on demographics (including age or seniority), roles (such as leadership, management, or technical specialists) or sectors (such as technology or finance). Make sure you gather data on your peopleโs wants and needs in an experiential way, without making initial assumptions.
๐ก Provide a variety of content
Offer several options in terms of format, length and topics, and set up specific KPIs to measure just how popular each option truly is. Users' feedback is used to develop content that fits learner preferences, and to surface new topics based on what you learn along the way. Innovate and try new things, but do not test everything at once if you are testing something new.
๐ก Repurpose your content
This is a great way to offer a variety of material and reach a wider audience. For example, after commissioning the creation of a video, turn your main deliverable into a series of texts or audio bites. The savings on budget will also allow you to reach a wider range of learners and give you a reason to contact staff every week with new resources. Repurposing content also increases the chances of your material landing at the right moment in the employeeโs learning journey.

An ROI standpoint, content that remains relevant and brings people back repeatedly is obviously beneficial. But there are many other advantages to producing evergreen content; it presents a great opportunity for SEO optimisation, making it easier for new users to find your content through Google or YouTube. It can also be shared and reshared through your social media platforms or internal comms channels as it remains relevant to learners. Top tip: donโt just leave your content there as it could easily age. Schedule a review at regular intervals in case a little spruce-up is required.

Modern learners will select learning material when they are ready to consume it. Having your content readily available will go a long way towards enticing your talent pool to focus on resources you curated before searching elsewhere. Create video, audio and visual content that can be viewed on phone screens. Enable staff to bookmark items, pause and resume viewing, or suggest similar or related resources. Users should be able to get in easily, get out if they need to, and come back at a time of their choosing.

Short attention spans often prevent users from reading the text that is in front of them in full. They are more likely to consume information presented to them in a visual format since a visual presentation is more engaging. For kids watching a video or looking at an infographic will be easier to consume than reading a whole book! Similarly, an audiobook or a TED talk would have more listens/views than any book on the same topic.

Optimize your text for efficient ways of reading, as people tend to scan quickly to find the most important points. Include content that is relevant. Hiding unnecessary data and having a cleaner UI is another step towards minimalism.

Reduce the number of actions you may require from a user. Prioritize what it is that you ultimately want from your user.
