Sur//face
BA (Hons) Fine Arts

Sur//face approaches surface not as a boundary or exterior to be overcome, but as a condition through which relations become perceptible.

To engage with a surface is to enter a field of tension, between depth and appearance, stability and flux, the visible and the withheld. The prefix sur-signals that which exceeds or overlays, unsettling any singular plane of reading

Across the works, surfaces are understood as stratified fields, going through processes of construction, erosion and reconfiguration, acting as sites for gesture, material and time to communicate. Rather than revealing an underlying truth, they function as sites where layered processes remain present, where what has gathered continues to reject containment. Surfaces operate as both structure and event: a condition in which forms emerge, recede and remain in states of becoming

Within this field, the face is not approached as a fixed image of identity, but as a surface in formation, dispersed across materials, gestures and many layers of temporality. It appears intermittently, partial, not fully present and yet as excess, resisting a singular cohesive state.

Together, the works presented by the graduating cohort of the BA (Hons) Fine Arts programme articulate surface as a condition of stratification, emergence and excess, where visibility is continuously negotiated, and where what comes into presence remains contingent, unstable and open.

Shifting Grounds
Diploma in Fine Arts

This exhibition traces the graduating students’ journey through an artistic practice understood not as a series of fixed results but as a living condition.
They have learned to adapt and treat materials as active partners, holding memory, inviting touch and carrying potential. Rather than seeking resolved resolutions, they have embraced states of transition, moving between the formed and the forming, the present and what lingers.
Central to their process has been a quiet act of pre-positioning. They arrange their studio spaces, their materials and their uncertainties before the first mark is made. This deliberate staging becomes a kind of playground, a catharsis palace where inquiry stays open and vulnerability is welcomed. They have moved through cycles of searching and researching, constantly repositioning their visual and conceptual identity. Abstraction, reminiscence and expression layer upon one another, deepening through repetition and return.
What you see in this space is not a declaration of arrival or a finished product but a field of encounter. The works do not separate into neat parts. Instead, meaning emerges through proximity, attention and the slow act of folding and unfolding of experience into form. Each piece holds the reside of questions asked and reasked.
This exhibition invites you to witness not only what these young artists have made but how they have become, through restless care and courageous play.

𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜΅π˜¦π˜³π˜΄ 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘡π˜ͺ𝘯𝘢𝘦 𝘡𝘰 𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭π˜₯ extends from 𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜΅π˜¦π˜³π˜΄ into a lingering condition rather than a fixed moment. Here, the fold is not a form but a meeting of surfacesβ€”gathered, pressed, and held without closure, where inside and outside blur. Unfolding becomes a quiet shift: sensed, partial, and unresolved.

Featuring the graduating cohort, this showcase offers a rare opportunity to encounter the full scale of each student’s practice, alongside journals and studies that trace the thinking, processes, and developments behind the works.

We look forward to seeing you there!
