If you have a P6 or Sec 4 child — this is important. DSA applications open around May 6–7. That means there are only about 8 weeks left to prepare a strong submission. Many parents think DSA Music is just about playing a difficult piece. But the real word is presentation. It’s about presenting your child’s skills, experiences and musical contributions in a way that shows how they can contribute to the school’s music life. Recently I did a free consult for a student with fantastic piano abilities and strong school contributions. There was a lot of great information — but it needed to be structured and presented clearly for the DSA application. At SmallGiant Music, we help students:• Structure their portfolio• Refine their performance pieces• Prepare the video submission• Present their strengths clearly. Don’t wait until it’s too late. If your child is preparing for DSA Music, reach out to us for a free online consult.

For the young ones, we love to expose them to different instruments like xylophone, maracas, ukulele and more! They get to experience fundamental musical concepts - pitch and rhythm - through a multi-sensory approach. This excites them and keeps them engaged! It also lays a strong foundation for instrumental learning when they are older.

Parents are their child’s first teachers and hold a key role in shaping them. A parent’s role in a child’s musical journey is also very influential and there are many ways in which parents can help their child along the way. Being a supportive and encouraging parent will accelerate the process of their child reaching the goal of becoming a self-sufficient musician in their own right and developing their own style of music 🎵🎸🎺.

We have listed some ways parents can support their child’s musical development from a young age.

“Opposites” is one of the Basic Concepts children need to understand in order to follow instructions and be specific in their communication. Understanding this concept is vital and helps in the academic sphere, in terms of listening, reading, writing, speaking and mathematics.

In music lessons, we teach "Opposites", for example Fast and Slow, through music and movement. Experiencing "Opposites" helps children to better comprehend the concept. It is not only fun, but educational.
