𝑹𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒆, 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅.

On 26 January 2026, the AIC team, together with our partners and local stakeholders, visited Kampung Bako Hilir, Sarawak to explore 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 under challenging weather conditions.

Despite torrential rain, the field visit allowed meaningful exchanges on mangrove-based aquaculture, community-led innovation, and nature-based solutions that balance food security, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.

This engagement reflects AIC’s ongoing commitment to:

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has announced plans to open up 117 hectares of farming space off Pasir Ris, Pulau Ubin, and Pulau Tekong for tenders starting 2026 — aiming for a production capacity of 𝟔,𝟕𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 (up from 4,100 tonnes in 2023).
This magnitude of expansion presents a major opportunity for innovation in farming systems, sustainable practices, and environmental stewardship. As the industry scales, challenges such as open-cage vs closed systems, water quality management, and ecosystem protection will become even more critical.

Meanwhile, innovative companies like 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 are expanding regionally, setting up hatcheries in Bhutan to empower farmers with sustainable aquaculture opportunities.
At the same time, the sector also faces real challenges, as traditional floating farms and kelongs struggle with rising costs and environmental pressures.
