On 26 January 2026, the AIC team, together with our partners and local stakeholders, visited Kampung Bako Hilir, Sarawak to explore ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ under challenging weather conditions.
Despite torrential rain, the field visit allowed meaningful exchanges on mangrove-based aquaculture, community-led innovation, and nature-based solutions that balance food security, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.
This engagement reflects AICโs ongoing commitment to:
- Advancing the ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ฒ through responsible, on-the-ground collaboration
We are grateful to the experts, partners, and community leaders who made this visit impactful, and to the local community for their openness and resilience.
Progress doesnโt pause for the weather โ it advances through shared purpose and trust.

As this month draws to a close, weโre reminded of something simple but important.
Real innovation doesnโt always show up as big announcements or rapid moves.
It often starts quietly โ with clarity of purpose, thoughtful preparation,
and consistency over time.
Thatโs where AIC continues to focus:
doing the work that may not always be visible, but is essential for sustainable progress.
Sometimes, moving forward means slowing down โ and getting it right.

A recent documentary, has raised tough questions about the true sustainability of fish farming. While aquaculture is often seen as a solution to feed the world, the film highlights environmental impacts and community concerns.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has announced plans to open up 117 hectares of farming space off Pasir Ris, Pulau Ubin, and Pulau Tekong for tenders starting 2026 โ aiming for a production capacity of ๐,๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ๐ง๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐จ๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ (up from 4,100 tonnes in 2023).
This magnitude of expansion presents a major opportunity for innovation in farming systems, sustainable practices, and environmental stewardship. As the industry scales, challenges such as open-cage vs closed systems, water quality management, and ecosystem protection will become even more critical.
At ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ (๐๐๐), we are excited by this development โ and committed to playing our part in research, developing sustainable technologies, and supporting stakeholders to ensure that expansion is responsible, productive, and resilient.
