IPUR recently had a review of our batik art installation "RiskTalk" featured on the Journal of the American Medical Association, the most widely circulated medical journal in the world. Connecting and to communicate risks, the installation features a combination of techniques including hand-drawn batik, hand-stamped batik, and hand-screened batik, to depicts trends in mentions of risk-related topics in popular written media from 1810 to 2009.
Positive reception towards the installation have led to discussions about extending the data analysis and batik representation backward to 1500 and forward to 2019, and through alternative mediums such as .

We had the pleasure of welcoming Prof Finale Doshi-Velez (Head of the Data to Actionable Knowledge group at Harvard Computer Science) to present her work on and human+ interaction.
Her insightful talk drew many engaging questions: from in AI to how people can be further empowered to make . Prof Finale presented some key points in summary:
- Interpretable machine learning can provide addition ways for a user to understand and interact with an AI.
- Transparency can enable calibrated trust (use the AI when it’s right, ignore when it’s wrong).
- Interactivity can empower more sophisticated teaming (humans correct elements in the AI; the AI provides options, etc.)
The full recording will be made available on our website soon. Stay tuned!
