Today, we explored the vibrant city of Fukuoka while learning more about Japan’s rich traditions, culture, and history 🇯🇵🌸

Our day began at Kyushu National Museum 🏛️🌏, where we explored exhibits showcasing how Japan’s history and culture were shaped through interactions with neighbouring Asian countries over centuries. Through artefacts and interactive displays, we gained deeper insights into trade, religion, art, and cultural exchange throughout Japanese history 📜✨

We then went to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ⛩️✨, one of Japan’s most important shrines.📚 Despite the rainy weather ☔, the shrine grounds were beautiful and serene. As we walked through the shrine grounds, we learnt about the significance of Shinto practices in Japanese culture and how shrines continue to play an important role in daily life and traditions across Japan 🇯🇵✨

The day ended at Canal City Hakata 🛍️🌃, one of Fukuoka’s most popular shopping and entertainment districts, where students enjoyed exploring the lively atmosphere and bonding with friends after a meaningful day of learning and discovery 🇯🇵❤️

Today’s journey brought us from the volcanic landscapes of Unzen to the historic city of Kumamoto, where we experienced both the natural and historical wonders of Japan 🇯🇵🌸

We began the day at Unzen Jigoku ♨️🌋, also known as “Hell Valley”, famous for its steaming hot springs, bubbling pools, and volcanic activity.

We also discovered more about the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen, one of Japan’s most devastating volcanic disasters, which greatly impacted nearby communities and reminded us of the importance of disaster preparedness 🚨🌋

After boarding a ferry across the Ariake Sea 🚢✨, we continued our journey to Kumamoto Castle 🏯. As we explored the castle grounds and admired the impressive architecture 📸✨, we learnt more about Japan’s feudal period, samurai culture, and the restoration efforts following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.

Today, we continued our journey through Nagasaki as we explored the city’s rich cultural and religious heritage 🇯🇵📚

Our first stop was Urakami Cathedral ⛪, one of the most well-known churches in Japan and an important symbol of resilience and hope 🕊️ We were blessed with the opportunity to attend Mass at Urakami Cathedral, making our visit especially meaningful as we experienced the living faith of the local Catholic community. 🌟

We also visited Oura Church ⛪✨, Japan’s oldest surviving Christian church. Through our visit, we learnt more about the history of Christianity in Japan and the challenges faced by hidden Christian communities during periods when the religion was banned. ✝️

Another highlight of the day was our visit to the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum. Desiree Lim (3CT) reflected that learning about the martyrs showed her the importance of courage, faith, resilience and commitment, and reminded her to stay true to her beliefs even when faced with challenges.

As we walked through the historical streets and landmarks of Nagasaki 🚶‍♂️📸, we gained a deeper appreciation of how history, culture, and faith continue to shape the city today.

Stay tuned for Day 4 - we are headed to Kumamoto! 👀

Today was a deeply meaningful and reflective day as our students explored Nagasaki’s history and learnt more about the importance of peace and resilience 🕊️🌸

We began with visits to the Dr. Takashi Nagai Memorial Museum and Hypocentre Peace Park, where students discovered the inspiring story of Dr. Nagai who dedicated his life to promoting peace after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki ☮️🤍

We then visited the Peace Memorial Hall and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, where powerful exhibits, artefacts, and survivor testimonies gave us greater insight into the devastating impact of war and the importance of preserving peace for future generations 🕊️✨

We even had the valuable opportunity to listen to an atomic bomb survivor’s testimony by Mr Michio Hakariya, who was just 8 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. 💭🌿

Today reminded us that learning extends far beyond the classroom and that history carries valuable lessons on peace, compassion and humanity for us all 🤍🕊️✨

Our Japan OLJ officially began as we touched down in Fukuoka, filled with excitement for the adventures ahead! ✨After meeting our local guide, we travelled to Nagasaki.

In the afternoon, we visited Dejima, a historical island that once was Japan’s only gateway for foreign trade during the Edo Period. Walking through the preserved and still maintained streets and buildings gave us a deeper understanding of how Japan connected with the rest of the world centuries ago 🌏⛩️

We later ascended Mt. Inasayama, one of Nagasaki’s most famous viewpoints, where we admired breathtaking views of the city! 🌆📸 Happy to report the hike up was worth it! 🌟

Stay tuned for more updates! 🇯🇵
