My Durian Hubz 榴莲疯 A contemporary global info hub for anything & everything about durians (Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian)

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐲 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐛𝐳 (𝐌𝐃𝐇):

The entire durian trade in Singapore (and probably elsewhere in the region) have remained largely stagnant over the decades since the 1980s, with mainly D24 (aka Sultan King or XO) being sold in typically make-shift stalls by 1 or 2 uncles in their singlets. Beyond eating the actual fruit, there was a clear lack in the market on innovative by-products and re

lated services. It is only in recent years that the trade has begun to evolve, albeit slowly. With the introduction of more durian cultivars over the years, enhanced by amoral selling techniques, continuous legerdemain marketing and demand slowly outweighing supply at times etc, the average durian prices started escalating. Some people even proclaim that ‘eating durians is like eating gold’! My Durian Hubz (MDH) was hence created to provide an immersive learning and edutainment platform for all – regardless of age, race or religion. We seek to co-create a contemporary global info and retail hub for anything & everything about durians from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesian & Philippines, including their ecosystems, value chains and other related-products, bit-by-bit. MDH is probably the 1st in Singapore to explore beyond the Malaysian and Thai durian cultivars. Through empowering others with the necessary knowledge on The World of Durians, and creating heightened awareness on the various business practices by durian vendors, we aim to build a better-informed community, as well as to provide fun edutainment and curated experiences / products for all!

BALIK PULAU: As Penang residents retreat indoors to escape the heat, durian trees here are doing the opposite, bursting into bloom under weeks of dry, scorching weather.

👀👀👀 Malaysian durian growers reaped large profits over the past decade as demand from China surged, but a shift in consumer preferences now leave farmers with mounting stock.

The preference and appetite for fresh durians over frozen ones have been mounting in recent years. How will this alter the Malaysian durian trade? Comments?

It is the season of "Thai" durians again. BUT every year, every season...the same old cycle of "You sell A but it is actually B, but it is ok I will still buy A as you claim so" mentality keeps repeating over the years, even decades!

What can be done to really educate the end consumers that what they see or being sold is not what they are buying and paying for???

*1st time trying Puyat durian from the Philippines 🇵🇭, right here in Singapore 🇸🇬!*

Taste Profile (out of 5 ⭐):
Bitterness: ⭐ (more sweet than bitter)
Alcoholic: ⭐ (almost none)
Creaminess: ⭐⭐⭐ (and sticky)
Fragance: ⭐⭐ (has a tad of honey after-taste)
Looks: ⭐⭐⭐ (golden-yellow looking with large seeds)
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐

FINAL VERDICT:
We suspect the durian we tried was cut off directly from the tree before it ripens, coupled with the long journey here in cold-room temperatures, hence the fresh was a little wetter than normal and probably not as fragrant as what Puyat should have been. Nonetheless, the yield was very good considering we got almost 900g of fresh (+ seeds) from a 1.9 kg Puyat. It was a pretty good experience overall!

Oh...in case you are wondering..this Puyat is going for $12/kg.

📣📣📣 Durian lovers out there in Singapore 🇸🇬!

How do you satify your cravings for fresh durians, now that the Malaysian durian season has not started?

Not to worry...now is the time to try Puyat durians from the Philippines 🇵🇭. Yes! They are now available here in Singapore.

Puyat is the Philippine’s main commercial durian variety, and commonly found in Davao City. It has golden-colored flesh, and has a unique mellow bitter-sweetness. Puyat is one of the biggest durians in the Philippines, identifiable by its large brown spikes, pear shape, and thick stem.

Based on historical records, Puyat is a seedling of Chanee, durian breed from Thailand, brought to the Philippines in the 1970’s by Mr. Puyat.

Unfortunately, at the time of this posting, this particular batch of Puyat durians (see pics below) are not "ripe" yet, so we will do the actual tasting only tomorrow evening. Watch this space for the profiling...

We have always supported and advocated the sale of frozen (冷冻) durians - as an alternative to fresh durians, when the fresh durians season ends, or in places where freshly dehusked durians are not readily available, or where prices are sky-rocket. In fact, based on numerous blind testings with >500 durian lovers in the past 1 year, results have shown that >80% of the group was not able to clearly distinguish 'frozen' from 'fresh' durians.

Nonetheless, what we do not support are vendors who sell frozen durians outright as freshly dehusked durians, hoping you don't know and realise. Worse, they claimed "blatantly" right in your face that their frozen durians are freshly dehusked! Obviously, there are many reasons why they do so, which we will share more in our next posting....$$$ of cos has to be one of the reasons, no?
