š§ How Can We Think Like a Spatial Designer?
Spatial design isnāt about what you seeāitās about how you experience it.
Most people design for how something looks.
But spatial designers? They design for how something lives.
So what does a house look like when itās built for someone who can change their shape?
In this whimsical workshop, students were introduced to Barbapapa, a lovable, shape-shifting character from a
French childrenās bookāand challenged to design a home thatās just as flexible and full of personality.
They ask questions like:
š¹ How will someone move through this space?
š¹ Where do they pause? Where do they gather?
š¹ What makes this environment feel intuitive, safe, or energising?
A beautiful space is easy to admire, but a meaningful space is easy to be in.
Students sketched their bubble house concepts, thought through proportions, and then got hands-onābuilding unique domed homes using everyday materials like foam, string, and found objects.
More than just an art project. This was an adventure in designing with heart and imagination. šāØ
Spatial design blends functionality, emotion, and flow. Itās part science, part empathy, part imagination. And when done well, it can transform how people connectāwith the space and with each other.
š¬ Whatās one space that made you feel at ease the moment you entered itāand why?
(Not because of how it lookedābut how it made you feel.)
Letās talk about the design you donāt see.

š«āØ What if a school wasnāt just a place to learn but a space to dream, imagine, and create?
At Bukit Batok Secondary School, our Secondary 2 students were challenged to reimagine their own surroundings - transforming the Legacy Trail into a vibrant space that celebrates heritage, nature, and creativity.
With fresh perspectives and bold ideas, students explored what they loved, what they wished to see, and how design can shape experiences and most importantly, solve the problems they and the school have identified. Through sketching, storytelling, and collaborative visioning, they are in the process of turning everyday spaces into something meaningful.
And the best part? Seeing their ideas come to life, displayed and shared - because creativity thrives when we build, inspire, and learn together.
We're immensely proud to partner with Design Singapore and Bukit Batok Secondary School as part of the initiative. Stay tuned as we unveil the students' designs and the final transformation plan for construction!
