We used to think AI just helped students get things done faster. Turns out for Singapore‘s own university students, it’s raising a very different question. 93% of them use AI for coursework. 45% are worried it‘s quietly costing them the exact skill a degree is supposed to build.

There’s a word for this that isn‘t cheating. Singapore’s Education Minister called it cognitive offloading: letting the tool do the thinking, so we walk away with the product and skip the actual learning.

One business student believes: ”It takes away the part where I have to deliberate on a certain question or topic.“

Study stress jumped from 59% to 68% in a year.

85% of these students are anxious about getting flagged by AI detection tools, for using the exact tool their own syllabus told them to use.

Maybe the skill we actually need to relearn isn’t how to use AI. It‘s how to sit with a hard question long enough to answer it ourselves.

Lasting ten years here in SG has nothing to do with talent or luck. It‘s a completely different skill.

Not being good at your job. Not luck either.
