• Introductory sentence- should be broad and global- The technological advances in the twentieth century have resulted in the most dramatic changes in the daily lives of almost the entire human race compared to the changes in the previous one thousand years.

• Supportive sentence- In the context of Singapore, for the last fifty years, technological advancements have been transformational in almost all aspects of the life of ordinary people.

• Define `ordinary people’ – Even the low income earners, the factory workers, the hawkers, office workers who form the vast majority of citizens, not just the wealthy and privileged in the country, have experienced great improvements in the quality of life, better food, housing, education, health, transportation, income and a greater freedom of choice.

• Just about half century ago, before Singapore achieved independence, most residents in Singapore lived close to poverty levels, in squalid conditions, barely making ends meet and having little opportunities to improve themselves. Death in childhood was common and an average person would not be expected to live for more than sixty years, due to disease and poor living conditions.
