It’s World Mental Health Day. Mental health conversations for the Malay/Muslim community can be complex because it is deeply intertwined with religious beliefs. Before examining a gendered view, we look at how perceptions on mental health are shaped and negotiate how to move forward.
Our ‘Are You OK, Bro?’ event on 14 October is a beginner’s conversation-starter on male mental health. Three panelists share their everyday challenges as a father, community advocate and youth to destigmatise and demystify mental health conversations among males and male allies. Limited tickets are available via link in bio.

When we look at mental health from an ethnic lens, a 2020 survey by MOH reveals that Malays have the poorest mental health among Singaporeans.
It’s not hard to see why—the little research we could find about mental health in the Malay community shows that help-seeking has not increased significantly between 2019 and 2021 (National Population Health Survey 2021). This could also be attributed to a long-standing stigma towards mental health and the tendency to turn to alternative healing like religious rituals to address such issues.
But the specific factors are still unclear. How does gender, class or education level play a role in poor mental health? How can we address an issue if we know so little about it?
