The Design Incubation Centre (DIC) is an extension of the Division of Industrial Design (DID) of the

DIC developed our very own DID.IT label (www.didit.sg) that features projects designed by the young talents from NUS DID. Every DID.IT object is the very first production of a young designer and are produced in small quantity. Through this label, we hope to provide greater visibility and support to these young designers by putting their creations out in the market to kickstart their career.

The objects, showcased in The Nature of Things exhibition, serve as tangible links to the living world around us, underscoring the potential impact of design on environmental issues. They propose contemplation, interaction, understanding, and, at times, provocation.

Featuring projects that delve into the delicate infrastructure of the oyster mushroom’s mycelium, functioning as an air purifier. Or, seeing a solid slab of finely polished black timber that stands as a reflection of our culpability in driving climate change.

Humbled and honoured to receive the "Best of the best" Red Dot Design Award 2024, for CALIPSO!

The team's work on CALIPSO (Computer Assisted Live Imaging for Predictive Screening of Organoids) aims to simplify organoids’ morphology in real-time 3D, enabling streamlined growth, imaging, and analysis. This leads to breakthroughs in micro-organism imagery. We hope this technology will contribute to advancements in medical research.

This recognition wouldn't be possible without our incredible 3-year collaboration with National University of Singapore Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) and CNRS@Create. Their expertise was instrumental in developing this new approach to live imaging microscopy for long-term organoid observation.

This award is a testament to how design can help complex medical tools more accessible and efficient for researchers. Thankful to be able to contribute to the intersection of design and medical innovation.

Behind the scenes at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum!

Here's a sneak peek, a look through the window. The “The Nature of Things” exhibition is arranged within the scenography of a home setting. This presents a juxtaposition between two sides of a window, inside and outside—within human-designed spaces and without, across nature. As a vehicle for dialogue, the window encourages visitors to consider their place in nature, and to re-examine the impact human design has on the living world.

“The Nature of Things” exhibition is a joint effort with the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) and Design Incubation Centre (DIC), and Greydient Lab. The multidisciplinary nature of this collaboration bridges the fields of design, natural science, and technology to craft a holistic experience for visitors.

While you're here, why not explore more of what LKCNHM offers? As a safe keeper of Singapore's natural heritage, the museum not only seeks to share knowledge with the public, but also recognises the value of its collections among the scientific community which supports biodiversity research in Singapore and in the region.

The museum is divided into 2 floors. The first floor houses fifteen thematic zones, each showcasing specimens from the museum’s collection. The current star attraction, three sauropod fossils, is located in the Dinosaur Zone. “The Nature of Things” exhibition is located on the second floor.

After successful incubation at the Division of Industrial Design (DID)’s Design Incubation Centre (DIC), Rollo is in full production and live! The brainchild of Koh Bei Ning from the DID Class of 2022, Rollo is a rollerball device that helps to relieve general itchiness or itchiness caused by eczema and was a runner-up for the James Dyson Award 2022.

Bei Ning has reported to us that pre-orders have been fulfilled steadily in batches since early April this year and is pleased to note that the response from early product recipients have been positive, with users praising its efficacy and user-friendly design. These early recipients came from Rollo’s Kickstarter campaign last year, which saw an amazing 123% subscription rate, raising over S$100,000 from 969 backers.

Bei Ning will showcase Rollo at the Bare It All Event on 27 April 2024, organised by the Eczema Support Group Singapore (ESGS). Try Rollo in person! Details can be found at https://www.instagram.com/rollo_sg/. We are so proud of what Bei Ning has achieved. It has been a long journey, and we celebrate her hard-worn success.
