Exams

It is the time of the year when most kids and students are overwhelmed with tests, exams, papers, and essays.

It is even more challenging times for those who are diagnosed with a form of dyslexia and/or ADHD/ADD

They experience struggles to get the focus right and are trying so hard not to give in to pressure, stress and all unwelcome emotions and feelings that might affect the outcomes. The pressure is out there for high scores because you want that bright future so that you may tap on a more significant variety of possibilities.

So if you're not on some form of medication, what do you do?

• Keep breathing. It sounds simple, but under stress and pressure, people tend to hold their breath. If their breathing is shallow. So take a deep breath, hold it, count to 4 and exhale. Give your brain the oxygen it needs. You can do this before every task.
• Never ever go to an exam on an empty stomach. Your blood sugar will drop, and any clear thinking will consequently fly out the window. Take a light breakfast or lunch an hour before the exam. Fruit🍎or smoothies🥒🥑 are excellent starters of the day.
• If possible, take your thermos containing your favourite tea or water with you, sip your head clear.💧
• If allowed, take some fruit snacks into the room; an apple or clementines will do. A little chewing helps to get the oxygen supply moving, and guess what: better thinking.
• When preparing for tests, please don't sit down for hours and stare at the text; set your alarm ⏰on a 30-40 min schedule. And move that body💃🕺, put on that one happy song 🎶 that makes you 😀 , sing along with it and jump around a little. Your brain will thank you.

And of course, these are just suggestions you can do when stress is taking over your body. Most important is that you are prepared and have taken all necessary actions to be able to do your best.

Just believe in yourself, trust the process…… 💪

My Coffee-thought😏
Getting started might be hard. Sticking with it might be even harder. Why? Motivation is not constant. As a human being, we are subject to the ebbs and flows of motivation that accompany any quest. In layman's terms: we have good and bad days. And so do I. Last week I had a couple of not so motivated days. It was all about, me being more visible, get more picture out and putting myself in the spotlights.
So this topic threw me off, made my motivation disappear, made me question myself, and suddenly I found myself spiralling down a rabbit hole over-analysing paralysis. Self-doubt and thoughts like: I’m not good enough. I have to change, have to adjust, have to, have to…🥴
But NO❣️
My mission is to give Inspiration, Motivation and Opportunities. By giving examples, changing mindsets about the subject of dyslexia. By supporting those who are struggling, giving them prospects and how they can take control of life.
Like I do with this post, I'm exposing myself by saying this, as well as through my stories and teachings. I give examples on how to deal with forms of dyslexia, ADHD, ADD and so on, and how to overcome the belief that, “Succes is not for you”.
That is my exposure, that's what I want to share, this is me being strong, being supportive and being Authentic.
Allowing being me, gives me motivation, sets me to work and puts a smile on my face.😃
So what motivates you? Puts a smile on Your Face???

A wonderful Achiever, came with the following question: What mistakes would you celebrate? Meaning, what mistakes turned out to be the biggest wins in life?
One of my earliest mistakes was not finishing my math’s in 2nd grade Primary School. I was mostly 1 to finish last and to be honest, I found it a waste of time. But this time I was kicked out and was sent to the principal. Instead of going I hide myself behind his coat😜. I overheard the discussion between him and my teacher. She wanted to send me back 1st grade. This sounded devastating to me😳.So when they were looking for me ( they 📞 home and of course I wasn’t there) I slipped back into the classroom and was finished by the time my teacher came back. I learned from that moment: with a Clear Goal, Focus comes easy😅.

As a young child, our son was very energetic. He had an incredible imagination, was enthusiastic about many things — a UNIQUE person. We channeled his excess energy towards sports and provided structure.

Soccer —> team play and running.
Swimming —> perseverance and breathing.
Martial Arts —> structure, discipline, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
Playing a musical instrument —> stimulating, creation, and concentration.

Was he ever bullied? Yes, he was. We taught him to stand up for himself so his self-confidence could grow. He had fears, and we helped him along the way and stimulated him to believe in his capacities and abilities. We encouraged him to embrace his uniqueness and celebrated achievements to develop his confidence even further.

Gaming was and is something he is very passionate about. While his brain can easily multitask in games, he had the tendency to lose focus when it came to day-to-day activities.

Education was a challenge. It was difficult to motivate him to study material he wasn’t interested in. After school, he unleashed most of his energy before starting homework. Homework was limited to 30-45 min per subject, and he walked around when memorising. I stimulated his interest in reading a chapter of a book before bedtime, and stopping at a cliffhanger.

When he grew older, he embraced the anchoring technique we implemented. We tried to end on a high note every night. Here we reinforced the day’s positive experiences through anchoring. Whenever it was necessary, he could go back, recollect, and move on.

He finished university and now works in IT. He is a brilliant, communicative solid person, an out-of-the-box thinker, a unique problem solver. He still runs every day and exercises. He is fantastic.

Never let anyone convince you or your child that, ‘they are not good enough’, or ‘needs to fit in’, or ‘they must behave ‘normally’’.

They’re gems with an abundance of talent, waiting to be polished so they can shine in the new world we’re transcending in.

Was I ever frustrated? Of course, I was! Did I ever give up on him? Never.

How do you support your child with Dyslexia?

If you read a lot of books you don't have dyslexia. Fiction or Fact, what do you think??

Fiction!

There is a big difference between reading aloud and reading internally. And there are many types of dyslexia, in all those years I’ve worked with children and adults, I never came across a clear pure form. It was always imbedded or mixed forms. Fact remains that a large group of dyslectici hate reading books. My simple two cents is that the dislike of books often begins in the learning-reading process at a young age. The pressure imposed by school, well-intentioned advice for ‘must read’ a book where it is expected that improvement will come over time……
