💡 What does it take to design programmes intentionally?

On Monday and Tuesday, participants in our Intentional Programme Design workshop came together to talk about this question, reflect on their work, and share what they have learned from practice.

One thing that stood out was the need to unlearn and relearn, even for those with many years of experience. Experience gives us useful lessons, but it can also make us fall back on old habits. Designing programmes with intention reminds us to stay curious, check our assumptions, and be open to new ways of thinking.

🗣️ Another meaningful part of the workshop was the chance to have honest conversations. Practitioners shared their thoughts, experiences, and challenges in trying to design programmes more intentionally.

A common point that came up was this: we may think that running a certain activity will automatically lead to a certain learning outcome. But learning is not always that simple. We need to think carefully about the experiences we create, and how we can better support learning through them.

⚖️ The workshop also looked at the real challenges practitioners face. Programme design does not happen on its own. Things like space, equipment, manpower, daily operations, and facilitator support all affect what we can do and keep doing well.

Instead of looking for a perfect formula, participants explored how being more intentional can help connect what we hope learners will gain with what is possible on the ground.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who shared your stories, questions, and experiences so openly during the workshop.

📸 Day 1 of the Intentional Programme Design (IPD) workshop is a wrap!*🛠️✨

If you want to build a truly impactful experience, you have to be willing to break the mold first.

Today was all about the uncomfortable, exhilarating process of **unlearning and relearning**. When designing camp programmes, it’s easy to fall back on standard templates. But true intentionality requires us to strip that away.

We spent the day breaking down old habits and challenging long-held assumptions. It’s a messy process, but it’s exactly through this breaking down and building up that we open our eyes to a whole new perspective—shifting the focus from raw throughput to deep, learner-centric purpose.

Brains are buzzing, templates are being rewritten, and we’re just getting started. Bring on Day 2! 🧠💥

Safety or Supervision? Navigating the Gray Areas of Duty of Care - Blackbox Outdoor Education Pte. Ltd. 07/05/2026

Safety isn't just a checklist—it’s a judgment call. ⚠️

A recent incident near Lazarus Island involving the tragic death of singer Zubeen Garg has highlighted a difficult dilemma for captains and facilitators alike: How do you protect someone who refuses to protect themselves?

Legal experts are now weighing in on the "Duty of Care" and how subjective it can truly be. In our latest blog post, we break down:

✅ Why the standard of care increases when participants are at risk.
✅ The danger of "unspoken" risks (like fatigue or peer pressure).
✅ Why your "gut feeling" is actually a professional duty.

To our fellow practitioners: How do you navigate the balance between participant freedom and keeping them safe?

Error - ACCT International 22/04/2026

The Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) has opened the public review period for the latest draft of the ACCT Standards (17 Apr – 1 Jun 2026).

For those operating within the challenge course space, these standards are not abstract documents — they shape how courses are designed, managed, and audited in practice.

This public review phase is an important part of the standards development process. It’s one of the few opportunities where practitioners, site owners, and operators can contribute their perspectives before standards are finalised.

If you are working in this space, it’s worth taking a look — even if just to better understand how standards evolve, and what may be coming ahead.

⚗⚛Science Meets Art: Elevate Your Facilitation 🎨🎭

Ever felt like a great debrief was just a "lucky break"? Facilitation is often called an art, but at Blackbox OE, we believe the most impactful moments are built on a foundation of science and repeatable technique.

Join us this May for our Enhanced Facilitation Skills (EFS) workshop. We’re moving past high-level theory to focus on what actually matters: application.

Why EFS is Different?
Deconstruct the "Art": We break down complex facilitation into practical, repeatable steps you can use immediately.

The Peer-Review Powerhouse: The highlight of our workshop is the live practice session. You’ll lead activities and receive honest, constructive feedback from the trainer and—most importantly—your peers.

Real-World Testing: Your peers will tell you exactly what worked and what didn't in your debrief. That raw, peer-led insight is where the true growth happens.🌱

Stop leaving your participants' breakthroughs to chance. Learn how to make every debrief a repeatable success. 😎

🗓️ Workshop Details:
Dates: 16 & 17 May 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM daily

🌱Growth is rarely a straight line through the sunlight. ⛅Often, the most profound resilience is forged in the shadows, through endurance, sacrifice, and the quiet strength to stay the course.

✝ On this Good Friday, we join our Christian friends in a time of solemn reflection. We honour the journey through the dark and the unwavering faith required to see it through.😐

Wishing you a meaningful and peaceful day of remembrance.
