Three days. One goal: developing Challenge Course Managers. 🎯

Our recent ACCT Challenge Course Manager Course wasn’t just about covering theory — it was about giving experienced practitioners the opportunity to think critically, challenge assumptions and apply concepts to realistic scenarios.

📖 Day 1 started with discussions on what a standard really is, what defines acceptable minimum practice and how standards are interpreted in the field. Using Target Theory, we unpacked the different approaches practitioners have developed through years of experience and explored how these fit within the sphere of acceptable practice.

📝 Day 2 shifted the focus to documentation and planning. One question sparked plenty of discussion: “Should you develop your SOP or RAMS first?” Through group discussions and practical exercises, these practitioners explored the relationship between the two documents, recognising that they are not standalone documents but are closely linked; with each informing and supporting the other in operational practice.

🎙️ Day 3 brought everything together through practical incident reporting and fact-finding interviews. Instead of simply discussing interview techniques, participants took turns playing the interviewer, interviewee and observer in realistic scenarios. It was fascinating to watch each round evolve as they reflected on their questioning techniques, recognised gaps in their information gathering and refined their approach. Those iterations became some of the most valuable learning moments, reinforcing how effective fact-finding is a skill that develops through practice and reflection.

💡 At Blackbox OE, we believe learning goes beyond understanding what a Challenge Course Manager does. We create opportunities for practitioners to experience how these decisions are made through realistic scenarios, meaningful discussions and hands-on practice. It’s these conversations, reflections and practical exercises that build the confidence and competence needed when it matters most in the field. 🏕️

🙌🏼 A huge thank you to all the practitioners for your openness, insights, and willingness to learn from one another over the past three days. Together, we’re committed to raising the standards of challenge course management and building a stronger community of outdoor professionals. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

😎What does it take to become a confident Challenge Course Practitioner❓

Our June 2026 Basic Challenge Course Practitioner (BCCP) course began with the Challenge Course Facilitation (CCF) workshop, where participants explored the foundations of facilitation, group development and experiential learning. Before learning the technical aspects of operating a challenge course, participants first developed an understanding of how to support groups and facilitate meaningful learning experiences with confidence.

🧗 The course then progressed into the technical components of BCCP, where participants built the knowledge and practical skills required to operate challenge courses safely and competently. Through discussions, practical sessions and assessments, participants had the opportunity to apply what they had learnt while developing their confidence as practitioners.

👏 Congratulations to everyone who completed the course and thank you for your commitment to learning throughout the journey! We look forward to seeing you continue making a positive impact in the outdoor education community.

Big week at Blackbox OE! 😎

We’ve had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Korey Hampton in sunny Singapore this week as we go through our ACCT Accredited Vendor Programme review. She joined us to observe our Basic Challenge Course Practitioner (BCCP) course and our L1 assessments, and we’ve truly valued the fresh eyes and industry insights she brought to the table.

We wrapped things up on a high note with a great dinner tonight, catching up with Korey and some of our fellow ACCT Accredited Vendors. It was the perfect way to cap off a busy couple of days.☕️🍽️

Safe travels home, Korey, and thanks for the visit! 🌏✈️

💡 What does it take to design programmes intentionally?

On Monday and Tuesday, participants in our Intentional Programme Design workshop came together to talk about this question, reflect on their work, and share what they have learned from practice.

One thing that stood out was the need to unlearn and relearn, even for those with many years of experience. Experience gives us useful lessons, but it can also make us fall back on old habits. Designing programmes with intention reminds us to stay curious, check our assumptions, and be open to new ways of thinking.

🗣️ Another meaningful part of the workshop was the chance to have honest conversations. Practitioners shared their thoughts, experiences, and challenges in trying to design programmes more intentionally.

A common point that came up was this: we may think that running a certain activity will automatically lead to a certain learning outcome. But learning is not always that simple. We need to think carefully about the experiences we create, and how we can better support learning through them.

⚖️ The workshop also looked at the real challenges practitioners face. Programme design does not happen on its own. Things like space, equipment, manpower, daily operations, and facilitator support all affect what we can do and keep doing well.

Instead of looking for a perfect formula, participants explored how being more intentional can help connect what we hope learners will gain with what is possible on the ground.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who shared your stories, questions, and experiences so openly during the workshop.

📸 Day 1 of the Intentional Programme Design (IPD) workshop is a wrap!*🛠️✨

If you want to build a truly impactful experience, you have to be willing to break the mold first.

Today was all about the uncomfortable, exhilarating process of **unlearning and relearning**. When designing camp programmes, it’s easy to fall back on standard templates. But true intentionality requires us to strip that away.

We spent the day breaking down old habits and challenging long-held assumptions. It’s a messy process, but it’s exactly through this breaking down and building up that we open our eyes to a whole new perspective—shifting the focus from raw throughput to deep, learner-centric purpose.

Brains are buzzing, templates are being rewritten, and we’re just getting started. Bring on Day 2! 🧠💥
