HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CONNECTED CHILD!
A parent spoke with me over the weekend over an exasperating conversation with her child. A little background - the child is in a mainstream primary school with a suspected diagnosis of autism.
Story (beginning) - the teacher said to the class to hand up their homework. Child took out the worksheet, lo and behold, it was not handed up! Teacher called parent to say the worksheet is missing/ not done.
Story (at home/ the investigation) - Parent asked child what happened to the worksheet. Child started to cry and panic, thinking he has done something wrong!
Version 1 of where-did-worksheet-go was his classmate took the worksheet and threw it away.
Version 2 of where-did-worksheet-go was the fan blew the worksheet away to under a table.
Version 3 (FINAL version) - he took out the worksheet, it dropped to the floor, he did not think he had to pick it up because it was under his table buddy's table!
Conclusion - we need to create all kinds of scenarios for problem solving for this child. To brainstorm the different possibilities & alternatives when things go awry.
So, was the worksheet found? No! Teacher gave child a new piece which he completed in class.

A simple instruction like “Sit properly” can mean many different things to a child.
Does it mean:
• Feet on the floor?
• Face the table?
• Sit still?
• Hands to yourself?
When instructions are vague, children may appear “non-compliant” when they actually don’t fully understand what is expected.
Instead of:
❌ “Sit properly.”
Try:
✅ “Put both feet on the floor.”
✅ “Face your body towards the table.”
