I’ve been trying to model for my child a healthy detachment with hair: besides the basic washing, drying and occasional combing, I don’t fuss about my hair much. Once, she asked me how people get a fringe and I happily cut my hair by way of showing her. After all, hair grows back. And yet the year when I shaved it all off was the hardest, and I do not wish it upon anyone. This weekend, we’ll be donating our hair so it can be used by others! (edited for clarity: just cutting our hair short, not shave bald - I’m not yet ready/willing to go all the way again!)

Come join the carnival and donate generously towards the production of wigs for those battling cancer.

This cause is close to my heart. Around this time three years back, I voluntarily let all my hair go for a cancer fundraiser. It was during the height of covid, which I thought was the perfect time: I’d just stay home or hide behind a mask. Many of you rallied around and we raised a significant sum together. In all truthfulness though, going bald took a toll on my sense of dignity and self-confidence. Behind the smiles, I didn’t like how I looked in the mirror. I took much less selfies and pictures with my children. I was self-conscious on camera during zoom meets. I felt unattractive. All the while, I longed for my hair to grow back. This year, I’d like to dedicate our efforts to raising funds to produce three wigs, in the name of three strong women in my family and household who have battled cancer. A group of students run Project Haircatchers 2023 every year, and it costs $180 SGD to make one wig. Our personal family goal is to raise a total of 3x $180 ie = $540 SGD. You may donate to them directly. Alternatively, dm to paynow me and I will organise a lump sum transfer to their platform within the next 30 days (by 25 May 2023), so that we can track our progress together. With our hair donation and your monetary support, I hope that we can lift someone’s spirits with beautiful wigs when they need it the most. Thank you in advance, and may God bless you and your family!

I’ve been curious about ChatGPT and have opened it up the first time today. Of course, I had to ask about Montessori and Singapore : ) Here’s what it came back with - what do you think?

Have you used ChatGPT for your work or at home, or applied it an any Montessori-related way? I’m eager to explore the possibilities (and limitations!)

*SIMBANG GABI in Singapore 2022* starts TONIGHT, 15-23 Dec, 8pm, Various Parishes. Nine evenings of daily masses - a Filipino advent tradition to prepare for Christmas, see pictures for venues per night
—-
This Filipino tradition of a pre-Christmas novena starts TONIGHT, Thursday, 15 Dec and continues for nine evenings until 23 Dec in various parishes. Mass starts at 8pm but crowds start coming in an hour before. Based on past experience, it ends around 930pm.

This year, these parishes have Simbang Gabi on all 9 nights:
- Our Lady Star of the Sea (Yishun)
- Blessed Sacrament (Commonwealth)
- Our Lady of Lourdes
- Church of Divine Mercy (5 nights)

Images are screengrabs from a pdf that was fwded to me - unfortunately, I do not know the source nor the organisers, so I cannot answer queries. If you do know the folks involved, kindly get in touch so I can give them proper credit. Thank you! K

It’s Advent season again, when we reflect and await with joyous anticipation the feast of Jesus’ coming.

This year, I would like to invite you to come with your children to our little “upper room”, to listen to scripture together and ponder with our little ones the Light that has come on the first Christmas.

I am thankful for Elaine who took initiative and nudged me along this project, and for her gracious help in the lead-up to this event and on the actual day. The event is open to all. Details are below👇🏽 kindly dm either of us if you’re keen to join, as our capacity is limited 💕

🗓️ Friday, 23 December 2022
🕜 1:30-3pm
📍The Attic by SG Montessori
61 Kampong Bahru Road
#02-03 Singapore 169368
(staircase up to rooftop, limited space for strollers)

DONATE-AS-YOU-WISH! The sessions will be free - since all the usual materials at The Attic will be put away, to make space for our reading and reflecting upon bible scriptures. I ask for your commitment to contribute an amount to your charity of choice this December.

Wishing you hope, peace and joy,
Karen & Elaine

View from my favourite sitting spot in my workplace, my “second home”.

I brought the San Damiano crucifix in for our first Advent praydate in this space last year; it hasn’t left since.

The silk painting isn’t mine though I especially like it for featuring almost all the colours of the liturgical calendar 💜🤍💚💕

It’s been a little more than a year now since God has shown us this place and the work we feel called to do - to spread the work of Dr Maria Montessori, so that more adults discover the richness of childhood, and the greatness with which the littlest ones are made.

Jesus put a little child by his side, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me… for the least among all of you is the greatest.” Luke 9:46-48

This is a daily challenge for me as a parent caring for my own children and journeying with other families who come through our doors.

Welcome to my grid, where I hope to touch upon the space where Montessori intersects with faith, as well as the work I do in our physical Montessori community space for families and caregivers.

I hope to welcome you soon too, both here online and in-person 💕 Karen
