🎓 𝗛𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 are essential when it comes to Math problem-solving. Not only can they help to make the question much easier, they can also cut down the time taken to solve it.

💡 Today, we’re featuring 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, which is also known as the 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱. This approach requires us to first make an assumption (as its name suggests), before working step-by-step to address the difference from the actual value.

❓ These questions also tend to have 𝟯 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀:
1. Two types of objects with something in common (E.g. legs, monetary value, etc.)
2. The total number of objects and common value are provided
3. The individual number of each object is unknown

👀 Let’s take a look at these two problems to see this heuristic strategy in action!

Mrs Sim was trained in National Institute of Education (NIE) and taught Maths in a secondary school in the West for almost a decade. She was also an Assessment Officer from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) which collaborates with MOE on all national examinations, including GCE 'N' and 'O' Levels. Mrs Sim graduated with cm credit in Applied Mathematics from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Did you also identify '𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹' as the keyword? Since both fractions of money belonging to James and Sam are 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹, we therefore know to make the numerator of both fractions the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲. This is to make sure that the units are also the same, which will let us compare them (as shown in the diagram). Lastly, fill in the information given in the question and solve it! ✅
