We will be going back for the planned 2026 South Island GS Safari, probably March/April 2026

We have 2 additional trips planned for North and South Island as well. Information out once we have the dates for the GS Safari

There is something for every level of riders. The terrain is challenging enough and simple enough for riders with some off road experience
Like anything… be prepared and get trained before to truely enjoy the off road sections

Day 4…… BMW GS Safari New Zealand 🇳🇿 . 11 days off roading in New Zealand North Island.

Time: 8hr

Bag drop 0700hr
Roll off time anywhere between 0800-0830hr

BMW GS Safari is not a race. We are given the route (map&GPX file) before hand and make our own way at our own pace. There are cut off times if we dont make it to certain point within certain time and we will have to take the short cut road sections

Today’s terrain was varied and a little bit simple….. to get everyone into the flow of things

Day 3…… BMW GS Safari New Zealand 🇳🇿 . 11 days off roading in New Zealand North Island.

Distance: 530km
Time: 7.5hr

Early morning start for 500+ km ride from Wellington to Rotaruo
Wet wet wet first 2 hours then perfect riding weather 17-19 deg C with lots of nice empty stretches thru the national parks

Registration and catch up with old friends and made lots of new friends. Some of the guys have done more than 30 safaris …

Day 2 …… BMW GS Safari New Zealand 🇳🇿 . 11 days off roading in New Zealand North Island.

Bought an Air New Zealand ticket fom Singapore to Wellington, transit via Auckland. (Cheaper than buying a Singapore Airline ticket direct) Singapore to Auckland was fine (code share with Singapore Airline). Auckland to Wellington is another issue!!! Have to get the bags from luggage and get it to Domestic terminal in 30min 1.2km walk/trolley away!!! What is going on air New Zealand !!! Made it just as the gate was closing …

Bike rental from Bad Horse Rental in Wellington (with off road tyres fitted) and 500+ km ride to the start in Rotorua tomorrow assuming if I don’t detour and take the scenic adventurous route!!

Staying with Christian Carling and family, an old school friend from UK, where we first got our bike licence together 40 years ago!!!

Day 1 …… BMW GS Safari New Zealand 🇳🇿 . 11 days off roading in New Zealand North Island.

Heading to New Zealand tonight for the First ever BMW GS Safari held outside of Australia. However, have a First ever Route 55 Adv off road training at Sunway Iskandar XPark Johor too. Have been postponing the Off road training program since Covid because of lack of venue provider and hopefuly can work out a semi permanent arrangement here. Training grounds are important but surrounding facilities are just as important. Secure storage, proper toilet, F&B, and more importantly workshop and medical facilities nearby. Wont be surprise if the next GS Trophy selection will be held here too …..
Tentatively next Route 55 Level 1&2 training dates:
- 23 May Level 2
- 24 May Level 1
- 25 May Level 2

Had an excellent group of 11 off road enthusiasts today. Some with brand new bikes, some with rentals. Hopefully we can all ride the 2026 BMW GS safari together …

- small country roads with lots of animals roaming freely… pigs, cows, horses and many many dogs

- could not asked for more perfectly timed weather!!! Rainy, wet, foggy and overcast the whole day AND it was our “transport” day… riding from east to west on a mixture of small roads and semi highways (semi cause a large portion is still being built)
- went pass Stallin house/museum
- lunch at a salmon farm
