Many students have asked me about news headlines screaming that Meta (META) faces $1.4 trillion in penalties in the social media addiction trial that opened this week. The stock is down 15.8% in a month. Am I concerned?

The answer is no. I have seen this movie many times before.

That $1.4 trillion is the states' opening ask, not the outcome. The judge has already called the figure "unreasonable" in open court. This is how US litigation works. Plaintiffs anchor with a headline number for negotiating leverage. Then constitutional due process limits on excessive penalties, many years of appeals and eventual settlements shrink it to a fraction of the ask.

History proves it:

In 2000, a court ordered Microsoft ($MSFT) broken up. The order was reversed on appeal, MSFT settled intact and went on to become one of the most valuable companies on earth.

The DOJ demanded Google (GOOGL) divest Chrome. In September 2025 the judge rejected any breakup, and $GOOGL surged to all time highs.

Meta itself paid a $5 billion FTC privacy fine in 2019, the largest ever, and the stock rose that very day. The FTC case to unwind Instagram and WhatsApp was thrown out in November 2025. In March 2026, a similar addiction case that made scary headlines ended with just $6 million in damages.

In every case, the economic moat emerged stronger and the business even more profitable

Here is the irony. The lawsuit's core claim is that Meta's products are too engaging and too hard to quit. Sticky products, powerful network effects, high switching costs. That is the legal system describing a wide economic moat under oath, which is exactly why StockOracle rates META's OracleMoat as Wide.

Most people do not grasp Meta's scale. 3.6 billion people, nearly 60% of the world's entire internet population, use at least one Meta product every single day. A textbook brand monopoly on sale.

At $543.67, META trades 40% below its OracleValue of $905.68, at just 16.8 times forward earnings. Once again, Mr. Market is irrational in the short term.
