A recent article by The Good Food Institute reminds us of a hard truth: traditional fishing and aquaculture alone cannot sustainably meet the protein needs of a growing global population.
At the Aquaculture Innovation Centre (AIC) in Singapore, we understand this challengeโ€”and weโ€™re actively working on solutions.
โœ… From developing sustainable feed alternatives to applying AI in aquaculture operations,
โœ… From improving hatchery success rates to restocking threatened species like mud crabs,
AIC is rethinking how we grow seafoodโ€”responsibly, efficiently, and with long-term food security in mind.
While alternative proteins (plant-based, cultivated seafood, etc.) will play a major role in the global food landscape, sustainable aquaculture remains a critical part of the solutionโ€”especially for tropical and coastal communities.
Letโ€™s build a resilient, diverse, and future-ready seafood systemโ€”together.

Making sure the stars of chilli crab wonโ€™t vanish from the table 28/04/2025

Chilli Crab โ€” one of Singaporeโ€™s most iconic and beloved dishes, is famous around the world for its rich, sweet, and spicy flavours.

But have you ever wondered: where do these crabs come from?

The chilli crab is more than just a national dishโ€”itโ€™s a symbol of Singaporeโ€™s culinary heritage. However, the sustainability of its key ingredient, the mud crab, is under threat due to overharvesting and habitat loss.โ€‹

The Aquaculture Innovation Centre (AIC) is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that this beloved delicacy remains on our tables for generations to come. Through cutting-edge research and collaboration with local aquaculture businesses, AIC is developing sustainable breeding and hatchery-based farming methods for mud crabs.
