🏆 Best Paper Award at IEEE EMBC 2026

Congratulations to our ECE research team comprising Shao Yurui, Assoc Prof Arthur Tay, Assoc Prof Heng Chun Huat and Dr Yen Shih-Cheng on receiving the Best Paper Award at the 2026 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC 2026) for their paper, “Learning Temporal Dependencies of Gait Cycles for Freezing of Gait Prediction.”

In collaboration with researchers and clinicians from National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the team developed a machine-learning approach to predict freezing of gait, a symptom that can affect people with Parkinson’s disease.

Using data from a single ankle-mounted sensor, the system achieved 90% prediction accuracy while requiring significantly less training data and time than conventional approaches.

The research could contribute to wearable technologies that provide early cues before freezing occurs, helping to reduce falls and support greater mobility and independence. 💙

A great example of how engineering and healthcare can come together to address real-world challenges.

🔬 Research Recognition | Nanoscale Horizons 2025 Outstanding Review

👏 Congratulations to Professor Ang Kah Wee, Yufei Shi and Ngoc Thanh Duong on their review being recognised as a Nanoscale Horizons 2025 Outstanding Review.

Titled “Emerging 2D materials hardware for in-sensor computing,” the review examines the potential of two-dimensional (2D) materials and van der Waals heterostructures to enable the integration of sensing, memory and computation within sensory devices.

By reducing the need to transfer data between separate sensing and computing components, in-sensor computing could enable lower latency, reduced energy consumption and more efficient edge-AI systems.

The review brings together advances in 2D materials, neuromorphic devices, optoelectronic sensing and edge computing, highlighting emerging applications including retinomorphic vision, motion detection, reservoir computing, LiDAR-inspired processing and multimodal sensing.

This recognition reflects the significance of the team’s work in advancing interdisciplinary research towards compact, energy-efficient and intelligent sensory technologies.

This summer, our freshmen kicked off their NUS ECE journey at ECHELON 2026, the ECE Orientation Camp organised by ECE Club! 🎉

Across three days of games, challenges and new friendships, our freshmen got a head start on life in Electrical and Computer Engineering. From course and curriculum planning sessions led by seniors to Scavenger Hunts and mass games, there was plenty to learn, explore and experience.

And of course, it wouldn’t be orientation without icebreakers, mascot-making, plenty of laughs and memories made along the way! 🫶

Meet two NUS Computing alumni quietly making Singapore more multilingual – one government website at a time.⁠

Harish Venkatesan and Hsu Zhong Jun are part of the team behind Polyglot, an AI-powered translation widget that lets Singaporeans read government content in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil. It launched recently on the MDDI and Smart Nation websites, with the longer-term goal of making translations a standard feature across all government websites.⁠

🎉 Congratulations to Associate Professor Hari Garg Krishna on being conferred the Honorary Fellowship.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering extends its heartfelt appreciation to Assoc Prof Hari for his 25 years of dedicated service and invaluable contributions to NUS ECE.

Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in leading the Communications and Networks research group, driving entrepreneurship initiatives that translated NUS research into startups, and shaping the education of generations of ECE students through curriculum innovation. His leadership in steering the department through multiple successful Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) accreditation visits has also been instrumental to our continued excellence.

Thank you, Assoc Prof Hari, for your unwavering commitment, leadership, and lasting contributions to the NUS ECE community.

The NUS Electrical Engineering Class of 1996 reunited on 11 July 2026 with nearly 80 alumni, faculty and guests for an unforgettable evening of friendship, laughter and nostalgia.
Beyond celebrating old friendships, the class also gave back by contributing almost S$68,000 to establish a Bursary for future CDE students, and presented a commemorative calligraphy artwork to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

🎉 Congratulations to Professor Dipti Srinivasan on receiving the Outstanding Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence for the paper, "SpinalNet: Deep Neural Network with Gradual Input".

Presented at the IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI 2026), this prestigious annual award recognises the paper published in the journal that has demonstrated outstanding technical quality and significant research impact.

Inspired by the human spinal cord and somatosensory system, SpinalNet introduces a novel deep neural network architecture that processes information gradually, enabling AI models to achieve higher accuracy while reducing computational cost. Since its publication in 2023, the work has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance and has been adopted by researchers worldwide, contributing to the development of more efficient and scalable AI systems.

Congratulations to Prof Dipti and her collaborators on this well-deserved international recognition! 👏
