Yew Yip Chong inspired Old Chinatown, 2024

In old Chinatown, daily life was characterized by bustling trade and commerce, with residents often operating small family-run businesses and engaging in vibrant street markets offering a diverse array of goods and produce. Housing typically consisted of traditional shophouses, with living quarters situated above the shop spaces, leading to overcrowded and cramped living conditions for many. The community boasted a rich cultural tapestry influenced by Chinese, Malay, and Indian traditions, with numerous temples, mosques, and churches reflecting the diverse religious practices. Social interactions were characterized by strong community bonds and close-knit social networks, and social gatherings, festivals, and religious celebrations played a significant role in shaping the lifestyle of the community.

Sunset Serenity, 2024
9.8in x 13.9in
Permanent Marker on Paper

Bathed in the warm, amber glow of the setting sun, the quaint Japanese shophouses line the bustling street, their traditional facades a harmonious blend of wood and paper lanterns. Each shop's marker art, intricate and vibrant, tells a story of heritage and craftsmanship, inviting passersby to explore the treasures within. As the sun dips lower, the sky transitions to a tapestry of gold and crimson, casting a magical light that dances across the painted signs, infusing the scene with an ethereal charm unique to this corner of the world.
