This is the first in my series of posts intended to reach out to all my students past & present (or anyone reading this for the matter) to inject some heartfelt “good feels” into their lives. Evidently, this post is taken right off my journal - I usually only write & not doodle, but this time, I kept in mind that it was going to be an Instagram post & planned the hashtags too. :) Please pardon the rudimentary photo-taking skills. The drawings however, cannot be helped. :) Have a lovely day ahead!

In today's more open society, one would not imagine many monarchies to still exist. However, in few states across the world, the head of state is taken up by a person who inherited the position. This is the case in a few European countries, most of the countries in the Commonwealth, and some Muslim states. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun 'monarchy.'

Republics go hand in hand with democracy (or so it's supposed to be). As of 2017, 159 of the world's 206 states use the word "republic" as part of their official names, showing the widespread proliferation of the concept as an ideal. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun 'republic.'

Democracy is a contentious concept, with many political philosophers contending its various definitions. Many societies today adopt a form of democracy, due to the popular nature of the system of governance. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun 'democracy.'

With the finite nature of fossil fuels, people have since the dawn of the Industrial Revoution been looking for energy sources that seem infinite - renewable. Renewable energy is how some propose we transition out of our carbon dependence, forming a cornerstone to any green plan. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'renewable energy.'

In the same vein as carbon accounting is the concept of 'negative emissions.' The concept purports to complement carbon capture methods, allowing regulatory authorities to ensure the goal of net carbon zero. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'negative emissions.'

Money makes the world go round. The same can be said for fossil fuels, powering trains, boats, planes, and cars. Furthermore, these transport options even require fossil fuels to make. The economy is deeply reliant on a dwindling supply of energy made in the Carboniferous period, sixty million years ago, from the compression of trees, forming coal, and the depositing and decay of ocean microorganisms, forming oil. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'fossil fuels.'

With an increase of overall greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, some have looked for solutions to balance economic growth and climate change. Some have resorted to carbon accounting, hypothesising that carbon capture methods can be used to offset one's carbon emissions. Personally, I'm a sceptic - how can we be really sure that said carbon offset is equivalent to this anount of emissions. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'carbon offsets.'

The habitability of the Earth relies on primarily two things - the energy emitted by the Sun onto the earth, and the Earth's ability to retain and turn this energy to sustain life. Greenhouse gases help the Earth trap the heat from the Sun, allowing life as we know it to exist today. On the flipside, too much greenhouse gas can trap more and more of this heat, destabilising the climate and ecosystems. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'greenhouse gases.'

With a scientific consensus that the global temperatures are rising due to the emission of greenhouse gases, the term 'carbon neutral' has gained prominence in public policy disourse. Our societies mainly rely on fossil fuels, which are burned to provide energy to power the modern world. In the process, however, the energetically dense carbon molecules turn into greenhouse gases. Similarly, agriculture also releases a lot of methane intk the atmosphere, compounding the greenhouse effect. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'carbon neutral.'

Biocentrism - the final in this trio series about philosophies and attitudes towards the climate and our relationship with our planet. Biocentric thoughtstands in opposition to the current status quo of our modern world. Biocentrism, in leftist spaces, often combines deep ecology with anti-industrialism and anti-capitalism , with the aim of preserving and protecting nature. Today, we discuss the origins of the noun phrase 'biocentrism.'
