Meet Bev – our new art teacher (and long-time English teacher!)
We’re so happy to introduce Bev, who many of you already know as our wonderful English teacher – and who will now also be teaching art on the English and Art course.
We asked her a few questions:
What do you want students to get out of your art classes?
– I want them to feel confident using experimentation as a process in developing personal visual language. It’s not about doing things “right,” it is about authenticity. In a world where many people feel the pressure to be perfectionists, art should give us a sense of liberty rather than restraint.
It’s about creating something personal, new and intimate. Art is not about perfection, it’s about exploration and expression.
What happens in your classes?
– We work hands-on with drawing, painting and different techniques in mark-making, and mixed media, as well as discussing the works of historical and contemporary artists. Of course, we will reflect on the basics of perspective, proportion and composition, but we will also explore certain themes, such as Self and Identity.
Through experimentation, discussion and reflection, students will develop ideas into finished pieces, with the possibility of a final exhibition.
How do Art and English connect?
– Art and English are both all about language, connection and communication. English becomes a natural part of the process – in discussions, reflections, and creative work. Being able to talk about your ideas in English adds another dimension, especially in an international setting.
What makes this course special?
– The combination! Developing both creatively and linguistically, in two uniquely special places presents a wonderful opportunity for students. The peace, history and beauty of Visingsö has long attracted artists, musicians and other creatives, whilst Brighton is a world-famous hub of creativity, colour and energy that cannot fail to inspire. Students will benefit from both environments, developing their skills in both visual and verbal communication.
