Det är den 10 augusti 1628. Den svenska flottans nyaste skepp, Vasa, kastar loss nedanför slottet Tre Kronor.

Kanonportarna är öppna, alla kanoner är uthalade i parad och salut skjuts. Fyra av de tio seglen hissas – fock, förmärssegel, stormärssegel och mesan.

När skeppet kommer i höjd med Beckholmen, knappt 1 200 meter från platsen där seglen hade satts, kommer en stark vindby som kränger skeppet långt åt babord. Vatten väller in genom de öppna kanonportarna och trycker babordssidan ännu längre ner.

De som är uppe på övre däck klamrar sig fast där de kan, medan skeppet kränger alltmer. Rorsmannen lägger rodret hårt styrbord för att vända skeppet mot vinden och kaptenen ger order om att skoten ska lossas så att vinden kan blåsa ur seglen.

Men det är för sent, skeppet går under.

För 397 år sedan var det en katastrof. Idag är det bärgade skeppet ett ovärderligt föremål, som kontinuerligt ger oss ny kunskap om livet på 1600-talet – samtidigt som vi minns de som miste livet den dagen i augusti 1628.

🇬🇧 On the 10th of August in 1628, the warship Vasa sank on her first journey in Stockholm harbour.

It was a catastrophe at the time. In modern times, the salvaged ship is an invaluable object. Vasa continuously gives us new and significant knowledge about the early 17th century, while we still remember the people who lost their lives that day in August of 1628.
